Virtual field trips, aka "outsourcing" or hiring another class (or group of students) to take a field trip to learn about particular content, and reporting back their learning and the learning your class requested from them: this concept is heavily on my mind. Students could photo, video, blog, wiki, or otherwise archive the experience so that literally anyone from across the world could have access to that exact same field trip! Talk about an engaging and memorable experience for all involved?…

Here is an interesting story and graph from Business Week on Online Activity:

And here is the link to the article.
I guess there aren't any real surprises here (young people make up the bulk of online users) but I think the number of…

In our district, once that last bell goes off signaling the beginning of summer, those of us on the "wires and pliers" side of things get kicked into high gear. Our administration has been progressive enough to find ways to add technology to our buildings, which is great. I am now finding that adding 300 machines to our inventory is no small task for our staff of two. I haven't even taken the time to get my new macbook set up yet,…

You have two choices.
You are 15 or 16 or 17 years old. Summer is just getting started, but already the days are passing too quickly. On the far shore of this beautiful inland sea of unstructured time, someone is waiting in a
September classroom with an assignment: Write an essay describing what you did for summer vacation.
There you'll be, hands poised above…

Hi,
Suzie Boss and I wrote a book but I won't be shilling here! What we've found in the process of writing is that we're part of a larger conversation around the learning functions of digital tools. We're especially interested in project-based learning. Please consider joining the community of interest forming around "reinventing" the learning experience in these different environments:

I was able to attend the National Educational Computing Conference this year in Atlanta and loved it! Now I'm thinking about changing my career focus from technology hardware/software support to instructional technology. I'm looking forward to hearing and sharing more ideas about technology in k-12 education!

It's pretty new, so fairly small at the moment. But, it's a start. Hope you find something useful.

Realising that even the keynote speakers are not fully aware of the revolution that this 2.0 software can cause. Brought down with a bump by the reality of inappropriate use of voice threads by some of my students... or was it just creative play ??

I am working on a project for my Master's in Technology about software available that can convert various applications to other formats. After doing a lot of research, I found a site that many of you might be interested in looking at. It is free and will convert your word documents to PDFs, convert Flash to Windows Media and more. If anyone knows of more sites like this, I would love to look at them.…

I am just finalizing my tenure as tech liason with the Buhler site of the South Central Kansas Writing Project this week (sckwp.wikispaces.org) and will move on to the East High School site next week. While I realize that not every teacher is as tech savvy or as open to technology as I am, sometimes I really wonder. My STL guys taught at an inservice and made the observation that teachers don't listen to instruction. I must echo that. I was continually frustrated this school year having to…

The end-of-school frenzy has died down and now I’m truly on my summer schedule of leisure and reflection. So, here are some observations and reflection about our recent Summer Technology Academy. What motivates teachers to attend a few days of technology training right after a…

Is there anyway to have a discussion show in the Main site when it is started in a group? If not, is it correct etiquette to post it in both locations?

I've just seen a new downloadable app that may not be quite ready for prime time, but it's so powerful and creative that it must be added to your box of Web 2.0 tools.
I met one of the principal's of impera at Squeakfest a few years ago. Squeakfest is the annual summertime Chicago get-together of Squeakers, that rare bunch of computer geeks who use and support a programming environment called Squeak. Based on Smalltalk, it is a free, 21st century environment for drag-and-drop…

From the Utube site:
In a world where people are often divided by borders, differences and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea seeks to overcome that -- to help people see themselves in others -- through the power of film.
In virtually every culture, movies hold an extraordinary power to inspire human emotion, from sadness and fear to laughter and hope. They connect us powerfully to the characters on screen and enable us to see the world…

I just got an iPhone and WOW! it is so amazing I can hardly put it down. I am not normally a gadget person, but the beauty of this phone just sucked me in. And no, I didn't have to wait in line for it. I went to the store and asked for one, easy as that. Setting it up was just as easy. In a matter of minutes I had synced my contacts, calendar, music and podcasts. The interface is so easy to use. I got lost yesterday, put an address into the phone and figured out where I was. I can search the…

In a few days I head to Barbados where my colleague Mela Berger and I will train eight youth how to use digital tools and web 2.0. The focus of the work they produce is the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade during the 200th anniversary of Britain's abolition.
Among many of the tools they will be learning, I am particularly excited about using Google My maps to trace the Middle Passage and other routes that brought slaves to Barbados and then on to other sites in the Caribbean,…
