Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Malcolm Forbes (1919 - 1990), in Forbes Magazine

I've decided to use this blog space (at least for now) to include the words of others I think are useful to think about, whether as something to aspire to or as something to avoid. This one, of course, is something I try to keep in mind each day. Teaching students to THINK is…

New Stuff

Well, since mid-June I have been blogging along (laubsblog) and learning fast...as a career educator (33 years) I have been guided (dragged is more like it...) into the field of Educational Technology by well meaning mentors (Darren Draper, most noteworthy...) and awakened to the possibilities of ALL technology...sheesh...am I learning fast. But, even though it is boggling my mind, I love teaching enough… Continue

Imbee - social network for elementary school students and teachers

Quite a few members of classroom 20 are wondering about the possible use of ning in the classroom.

Questions that arise are mostly connected to security and privacy.

There is a social network for school children, their parents and teachers, http://www.imbee.com

The blurb from the site claims this:

imbee is designed to provide parents with visibility of their child's activities on imbee. You have easy to use tools to guide…

Gender issues and the digital divide

Hi,

I am doing a class project on the Digital Divide for my grad school

program in education. This is a huge topic, so I narrowed it down

to looking at gender issues and technology use in the classroom.

I am interested in how gender plays a role in student interest in using

technology (if at all), but I am looking for any other related issues

as well.

If any of you have any insight to research in this topic, or… Continue

Integrating technology into education

This was a rather long forum post I made that I thought might do better as a blog post.

I think the biggest disconnect with teachers comes when a technological medium requires too much time to understand or maintain. That's

probably part of the enthusiasm behind social networking; you have a

profile page that says who you are and then you can go about

communicating with people who are online in real time. It's simple and

requires no technological knowledge or… Continue

BOOOYAH!!!

I couldn't think of anything to use as a post title, so I figured I might as well use that battle cry. It just elicits feelings of excitement and hunger, although most likely confused and misguided.. haha!!!

This year my class and I will be working with our school's library media specialist on a research project involving the native american tribes of New York. We are looking for a class (preferably 4th grade) to coordinate with. This promises to be a lot of fun!

I also plan on…

MS - Instructional Technology

I have been accepted into the MS - Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology Program and SUNY Albany. I'm not sure exactly what to expect but am looking forward to the course study. I'll be taking classes part time starting in the spring of 08. The classes will be on-line and during the summer. I read somewhere that anyone interested in instructional technology needs to take several classes on line to get the feel for on line learning. These will be my first online courses. I'm… Continue

Looking for Collaborators!

Anyone interested in participating in a place-based storytelling project I am creating? This will be a research project for a fourth grade class studying Native Americans. My class will be focusing on New York State tribes; I am looking for other classes from the original colonies area. The project will incorporate:

  • research about the tribes
  • podcasting
  • locating and placing each tribe on an interactive Google map, with links back to podcasts and perhaps a…

incorporating video

I will be working on an interesting multimedia presentation and I was wondering if anyone knows of some copyright friendly sites that would allow students to download educational videos in order to incorporate parts of the video into MovieMaker. We can't access Youtube in our district, so that is not an option.

Thanks so much,

Chris

The E-learning Journey

From what seems like very humble beginnings and the excitement of seeing power point for the first time, I am now amazed at the amount of resources that we have the potential to use in our classrooms.

In the institution that I work in we use the Blackboard system and are currently running at what I believe is version 6.2?

The uptake from teaching staff has been limited and I think there is still the fear that if you download information into the space you may not ever be able…

Wikispaces for RTL - Arabic and Hebrew

Sorry this is a cross post from my blogger blog, simply because I want to get the word out.

Wikispaces provide free, ad-free, password protected wikis for K12 educational use.

Until now anyone needing to align their wiki from right to left (Hebrew or Arabic) had to add a special tag around the RTL text. Not any more!

With the help…

Summer Lemonade

I’ve just enjoyed a fresh glass of lemonade. The summer has been a very hectic one. I’m doing way more work building houses that I thought I would be and this has really cut into the time I was expecting to be

doing other things. I have not been keeping up with my reading or my

writing as I had planned but, I’ve learned, that’s sometimes how it

goes. See, in a life before education, I worked in the construction

sector as a painter. It evolved from a summer job to a…

Attack of the Web 2.0 Tools

I keep looking at this empty blog space with despair but I find that I just don't have the time to keep up with all my blogs, wikis, twitters, Facebook, Classroom 2.0 and my other website!

I think I may be sinking beneath an avalanche of Web 2.0 tools :-)

Making Connections

I am excited to make connections with other educators, and to bring our students together through projects that use technology and the integration of many subject areas. I am willing to learn new things, and to share my experiences.

I currently teach Grade 3.

I also have a class blog that enables us to make connections with teachers and students from places near and far. We are the … Continue

Making connections across networks

I want to write a little bit more about the database I've put online

for educators that want to collaborate directly with other classrooms.

I got the idea from interacting with teachers on ning. I've been trying to contact as many teachers as possible through many networks

and it dawned on me that I'm making connections that a lot of educators

need but can't make on their own because they don't have the time. I

also noticed that a database of these people doesn't… Continue

International Education Collaboration

Many teachers are becoming aware of the advantages of connecting with

international classrooms. Resources for connecting and facilitating

these exchanges are at best crude. Examples of these technologies are

Twitter, email, Skype, Second Life, IM, wikis, blogs, and GTalk. While

each of these… Continue
