Greenbush Labs Wiki - Exploring Educational Technology

As Greenbush Labs (http://labs.greenbush.us) comes up on a its 2 year anniversary I have decided

to start to provide a framework for how we might move from Greenbush

Labs IDEAS - to PROTOTYPES - to OPERATIONALIZING the more promising

concepts into PRODUCTS/SERVICES.

The main focus of the Greenbush Labs Wiki (http://greenbushlabs.pbwiki.com) will be to provide a more in-depth and procedural list of "How… Continue

We're off to a great start!

It is so easy to forget in a year's time just how busy the first few weeks of school can be! Whew! A three day weekend sure was helpful just to get caught up on some school stuff. I was chatting with one of my colleagues the other day about how we tend to forget just how far we can take the students (educationally) in a brief 10 month period. Then...it's time to start all over again! Setting up the rules and routines sure takes a lot outta ya! As I write out my lesson plans at the beginning of… Continue

Social network links

I'm active in a variety of networks and have trouble keeping track of them. Thus, I created a list at http://www.tutormentorconnection.org/TMLearningNetwork/LinksLibrary/tabid/560/rrcid/92/rrscid/120/rrpid/1/rrepp/20/Default.aspx

With the growth of networks, it is getting harder and harder to build a community of purpose because of the time it…

Lets get started

Whoaa!! I only joined this site 3 or 4 weeks ago and since then have been on the most amazing journey. I find it hard to believe that I can see some of the wonderful work that people are doing from other countries and that their knowledge, experience and expertise is shared so readily.

I have already contacted people to work on collaborative projects and have loved working via skype with other teachers from USA and NZ to created the shared wiki for our project. My school is reasonable…

Voicethread Anyone?

We're days away from startup here in Ontario Canada and I'm wondering if there is anyone who would like to start a Kindergarten/Grade 1 project (3 - 6 year olds). I've been checking out Voicethread and it looks great at this time of year for that age group because they don't have to be able to write. One proviso on this is that our Board has a number of blocks in place and I'm not sure yet whether or not Voicethread will work. I'll be looking into this over the next week.

Back to School: The Real Deal

Well, back full-time for the first week. I'd forgotten how much energy it takes, and how tired I'd be by the end of the week. I also had forgotten what energy can be drawn from interacting with 2,000 excited youngsters!

Us veterans were given seniors for… Continue

Great Site

Thanks for starting this site; I am excited to share my grade school

computer lab information. I found this site when I did a search

for grade school passwords. I am a Lab Specialist for 850

students in a K-5 grade school. I am curious how student passwords are

handled at your school. Do you enter the passwords or does the

student? Do you keep passwords for each student? Do you

have any security problems with student passwords? Any input you have

about this… Continue

Nothing Like A Little Rest and Recreation to Cure What Ails Ya

My goals this week are to review internet safety with my older students and begin it with the younger ones. We will be posting our first blogs on Think.com, along with our "4 Slides" slide shows introducing ourselves.

I'm going to ask again why the District hasn't secured and allowed my wifi so we can actually use it! My tablet PC is itching to… Continue

thinking classrooms, thinking dispositions

There’s some strong support out there. Take Ron Ritchhart, for example. This is from Ritchhart’s book, Intellectual Character,

“What if education were less about acquiring skills and knowledge and more about cultivating the dispositions and habits of mind that students will need for a lifetime of learning, problem-solving, and decision-making? What if education were less concerned with the end-of-year exam and more concerned with who students become as a result of their schooling?… Continue

neuroscience of joy

While we’re setting up “thinking classrooms”, and supporting an “active mindset”, we have to keep right in the forefront the importance of joy, and of play. In The Neuroscience of Joyful Education by Judy Willis, we get all sorts of validation for this.

Think of all the schools and classes you know about that are cutting back on play, thinking less play will translate into more academic achievement. It may be that just the opposite is the case.

“Unfortunately, the current… Continue

Interactive Whiteboards in the Classroom

I am one of the fortunate teachers who has been using a SMART Board in my classroom for a few years now, and I am always asked, "Where do you come up with such interesting ideas? Where do I start looking for some ideas for my classes?" One site that I recommend and check on a regular basis is the SMARTBoard Lessons Podcast. Joan Badger and Ben Hazzard are the hosts of the informative podcast and each week, they have great tips and lessons. Check it out, I know you will get hooked on this… Continue

Skype in the Classroom - my first

We had just flown through the plans for the semester- I had so many web 2.0 tools to tell them about. Blogging, podcasting, wikis (showed them the great video) and Skyping with the web cam. My students were lining up to leave the technology lab on their first technology class since returning to school. We heard the now familiar noise over my sound system - my students pointed to the invitaion displayed on the SMARTBoard: ACCEPT or DECLINE the call. I hesitated- I had never seen this…

My Last Book

Not the last book I read but the last book that I read.

A few years back, I received a gift certificate from Coles book store from a friend of the family. I intended on using it during a visit to the city but when I went there was nothing that really caught

my eye. Time passed and I either forgot it at home or, when I went,

there was nothing that grabbed me. So, a few weeks ago while at

meetings, I went book shopping taking the tattered certificate with me.

I had…

Laptops coming to a high school near you!

It is official, the Kansas City, KS school district is providing 5700 laptops to kids in our high schools! I am extremely excited, but very nervous at the same time. We are planning on rolling out laptops the end of October. I'll keep updating my blog on how we are progressing.

After 2+ Weeks With Students, A Month in the Building

Oh, my. It’s hard to get back up to full speed! Maybe I’m wiped out because we start almost an hour earlier each day now, and we finish teaching 10 minutes later each day than last

year. It was a 65+ hour week. At least my students and I are finally

finished with our goal setting, skills checklists, beginning

keyboarding tests, introducing ourselves, and have started registering

students on…
