The other Sept. 11th in U.S. history...

Although September 11th will always be remembered for the World Trade Center, there was another significant element in American history on that date...in 1776. That was the day that the British and colonists met to try to avoid the American Revolution. They met at what is now called the Conference House in Staten Island, NY. More information about the meeting is at www.theconferencehouse.org. For those of us interested in technology, this meeting gives us a great opportunity. Imagine if classes… Continue

Sharing Student Voice: Students Presenting at Conferences

Hi all Classroom 2.0-ers!

I just finished a new whitepaper, Sharing Student Voice: Students Presenting at Conferences. There is more about it on the GenYES blog, but in short, it's about how planning and presenting at a conference can be a part of enabling student… Continue

September 10, 2007

The good old Monday mornings. Running late today because I had to put the top on my Jeep and thankfully, I was safe from the rain. I did manage to get to school on time however. Today, I handed out the book projects for the 8th graders to do. Most of them did not seem excited as they find these projects monotonous. The book project consists of students taking on the voice of a journalist and writing a newspaper article on the mystery that they just read. There are five questions that the…

Web2.0 Practices in the Act of Teaching

Since I joined Classroom 2.0, people have been great to share, so I read and reply within the different forums that interest me. Today, I took a look at the Professional Development Forum, particularly a How To discussion started by Jason Hando.

Like Jason, I am planning a web2.0 professional development session,… Continue

New spin on web 2.0

My spin on web 2.0 is that it is the future of computing in schools / k-12 education. The real question is when? 2.0 has great potential, the question is, how will districts manage access and who will host what apps. Will we be using Google apps in the form of a premium service such as business are starting to do now or will this be a local issue. There are some every important discussions that need to take place at…

7th Graders Work It Out Wiki-wise

If you want to see a neat discussion on Joel Bezaire's USN 7th grade pre-algebra wiki, go read this! Joel sent the link to me in an email and says, " ...check out a recent "discussion" we had on a difficult Problem of the Week my kids were working on. Exactly how I envisioned this being used, and a bunch of kids who didn't comment on the page said they read the comments and found them helpful."…

In Praise of Lulu Publishers and Digital Authorship

(reposted here from my Online Course Lady blog)

I just had a delightfully happy feel-good moment related to digital content!

This evening I got an email from a blind student who is learning Latin using a digital audio recording of Wheelock's Latin, one of the standard Latin textbooks. So: that is good news to begin with - I am glad that there is a good Latin textbook that has been configured so that it can be used… Continue

Starting Up Blogmeister Again

Midwestern temperatures are finally beginning to fall, making life a little more bearable for kids in our, old un-airconditioned building in Hannibal, Missouri. I just started this year's group of kid bloggers in Classblogmeister, and already the delight is evident in their eyes. They want to write in their blogs and I'm happy to see it, to take this attraction and use it to help them hone their communication skills, blend… Continue

Great Motivation !

Well, it looks like I put my time on the eliptical and bike machines to good use this summer. I just finished reading Will Richardson's book Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts. I know, I'm a little late getting to it. Now, I'm comfortable learning about the topics discussed in here already, but what I think makes this book so terrific is… Continue

9/9/07 LOLcats (otherwise known as Kitty Kaptchas)

LOLcats according to Wikipedia. Love 'em or hate 'em? I think they're pretty funny and addicting. What do you think? Every so often you might run across a crude one or a bad word in a caption, so be careful and always browse under adult supervision! The best collection seems to be at I Can Has Cheezburger? Some say LOLcats really originated from…

For fun - and incisiveness - take a look at the Doonesbury cartoon dated September 9, 2007. A copy of it can be found here: www.uclick.com/client/nyt/db among other places (you may have to search archives after today).

9/8/07 Teachable Moments In & Out of the Classroom

This week found me teaching blogging and internet safety. It was my first attempt to blog with kids; I'll see as I grade their posts this weekend how it really went. Maybe it was boring to introduce themselves and what they learned this

week about blogs and blogging; I'm still learning myself. My hope was that--minimum--they got some good practice writing strong paragraphs to a prompt so I can justify the activity to my Web 1.0 administrators. I don't want to keep giving… Continue

Do You Twitter?

I've been experimenting for about three weeks with a microblogging tool called Twitter. You've probably already heard of it, or maybe you're even using it. What are your experiences with Twitter? Do you use a different microblogging tool? What do you think of it? I've heard great things about how educators are tweeting for much more than "What are you doing now?" -- the web site's motto. Teachers and tech professionals all over the world are sharing…
