Hi Classroom 2.0-rs!

I just finished a 3-part blog post about a chapter in a great book called Meaningful Learning Using Technology: What Educators Need to Know And Do edited by Elizabeth Alexander Ashburn, Robert E. Floden. This is on my GenYES blog:

Creo que por aquí podemos comenzar

Me gusta este concepto y creo que le podemos sacar partido para la educación superior. Estaré invitando a colegas a ver cómo podemos empezar a crear una base para la comunicación masiva.

Nearing the 15000 mark!

It's amazing to see how far the Studica Skills competitions have come in just three seasons. Some of the submissions are from schools that have participated since our inception, and it's really nice to see they're still enthusiastic about it! We're slowly getting the word out, and we have nearly 15000 registrants worldwide so far!

Top Cow comics recently teaming up with Studica Skills was a great boost for us! Not only did it diversify the competitions even more, but it's…

Vegemite, blue tongue lizards and cricket

A year 9 boy was carrying a box with some straw in it, down the corridor after morning recess. There was a blue tongued lizard in it. (I think it is unique to Australia). So, I asked him if he could be granted leave of absence from class to show the lizard on skype to the Korean students at Uijeonbgu Science HS near Seoul. So, after logging on, the lizard was duly shown and the Korean students could even see his little blue tongue going in and out.

Next question was what the weather…

I'm back

I have been away from this group for a long time. I made a big change going into this school year. I moved from the middle school I had been teaching at to a new high school. The school that I am at is an Early college High School which is part of the New Schools Project that is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is a very exciting, innovative and decidedly "outside the box" program and I am honored to be a part of it.

We are very much under a microscope and we are… Continue

Facebook Application Development

Been spending more time lately thinking about Facebook Application Development for small businesses.

Was reading Andrew McAfee talking about The Impact of Information Technology (IT) on Businesses and their Leaders and talking about Facebook AS the Intranet.

Was also talking with another acquaintance about the usage of Facebook as a learning platform for K-12.

I really feel…

Taking the Plunge: Firing up a class wiki

I did it.

I created a collaborative space for my senior Biology class. I logged on to Wikispaces last night and created a private Wiki just for us - a communal spot to deposit resources, where the students can contribute rather than simply consuming what I can find.

Let me back up a bit...

For the last few years we have been exploring educational technology in our school, a K-12 independent school in Toronto. We have Smart boards…

Why do we have "school"?

Years back, when I was trying to figure out what to do with my life, I decided that I needed some money to pay for bills, food and rent because I didn’t want to move home and live

with my parents. I was 18 you know and that would have been a real blow

to my independence and self-esteem if I had had to move back home.

After doing a few odd things, I happened upon someone who needed some

painting. The rest, as they say, is history. I liked the job and,…

Can We Spark Innovation?

Today I'm thinking about the digital tools I've been using lately with varying success. I'm also thinking about David Warlick's recent apology to teachers. He apologizes to teachers for talking about them to administrators and others invested in improving schools/education. Does he really apologize? His apology is for talking about teachers and "getting them to teach differently" with administrators and others-- or for reporting out conversations he's had. I think that's how he words it. I… Continue

It's been awhile...

I haven't been on in quite awhile. I've been pretty busy with the new job -- teaching K - 12 at an alternative ed. school -- plus my own kids and husband. It's been crazy.
