Using Technology to Motivate Underperforming Students (Long Term ELLs Primarily) in High School

I am an instructional coach trying to support teachers in raising the D/F rates in our high school.  One vehicle to possibly accomplish this is through the use of technology such as document cameras, iPad2s, LCD projectors, etc.  Since not every teacher is tech savvy, I need to figure out which tool or tools would be best in trying to make the instruction more engaging for kids with a long history of failure.  Also, as a tech fanatic, I don't want to turn teachers off by flooding them with what…See More

My school district has just started distributing iPads to instructional coaches to support teachers who are struggling in their classes.  As an instructional coach, I was thrilled.  So my question to all of you who are already using iPads, what sites would you particularly recommend to a coach who must meet the needs of every discipline on the campus?  I have found a few such as SHOWME, Dragon speak, MathCube--to name a few, but with each teacher comes a different request.  I would therefore…See More

ELLs and Technology...Google Docs ?

Posted on February 19, 2010 at 7:54pm 2 Comments

I am experimenting with using Google Docs in my ELD classes. I am a novice at this, but want to learn enough to start the year off with it in August. I see it as a way to be kind to the environment as well as prepare my students for college. What I like the most about it is that kids won't lose their papers! If anyone has some suggestions to make this a more efficient learning process, I would be forever indebted to you.

Thanks

NCLB and ELLs--Success or Dismal Failure?

President Obama is thinking about revising the original NCLB legislation. As a teacher of ELLs, a CTEL trainer, professional development presenter, university adjunct online and onsite, I wonder if it is worth the time and effort. I find more teachers teaching to the test with less time available for classroom instruction. What do you feel about NCLB--keep it or chuck it or some mix of the two?…

Hi Denise,

Thank you for adding me as a colleague and thank you for giving the Nail It Now keyboarding method a "go". I like your style!!!

Cheers,
Georgie

PS I started a blog in 2007 that was to be about my efforts to market the method to School Districts, but only did 3 posts at http://nailitnow.edublogs.org, mostly about my philosophy that you MUST give ideas a go (they pop up seemingly out of nowhere and at the oddest of times, so who are we to ignore them or say they won’t work). I am shortly to coninue this blog about marketing my method, especially about how I go breaking through bureaucratic red tape and, if you like, will let you know when I do

You have some great typing activities here. I tried the GHOSTS one and really enjoyed it. I will throw that out there to my students (and offer credit for practicing).
