1st grade reading book 3 Replies

I'm looking for a great classic book to do a story element unit with struggling readers. Anybody got a good easy reader that would work for my 1st graders?

Language Arts Activities using a Smartboard (interactive whiteboard)

I will be presenting a session at a Smartboard workshop in a few weeks and my focus is using the Smartboard to enhance reading instruction. As reading teachers (experts) I would love to have your input on what lessons, activities or strategies you think would work well with an interactive whiteboard. If you have Notebook files you would like to share I would love to include them and credit your work. Thanks in advance.

The Book Whisperer--Favorite Quotes

My copy of the book is highlighted and sticky-noted beyond belief so I thought another good discussion thread to start would be some of your favorite quotes from The Book Whisperer. Please feel free to share and comment!

Would anyone out there like to read a story electronically to my second grade class in the month of November? My class will return the favor! We could share our stories via Skype, or Voicethread. My school is having a contest to see how many readers we can get to come to our classes this month and we get double points for Skype, or technologically facilitated read-alouds! Send me a message if you are interested. We are a second grade class in an independent school in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

New England teachers...will you be at NEATE on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 23-24 at the Providence RI Crowne Plaza Hotel? I'm doing a session on Saturday morning there and would love to have an audience with great questions! www.neate.org

I have a ? about Debbie Miller's Reading With Meaning. She is teaching a grade 1 classroom and each chapter seems to be about teaching a new comp. strategy that takes her across the entire year...How would you use this book in a gr. 3 class...would you spend as much time on each strategy do you think?? She also has a great idea for collecting questions called a "wonder box" ...the children go outside and notice things and write questions about these things on index cards to be placed in their wonder boxes..I was thinking that perhaps this could be a method for collecting "noticings" or "small moments" to spark ideas for writing in their writer's notebooks...what do you all think??

Thanks for sharing such great ideas and links... i've spent a little time having a look and know my weekend will be busily checking out these great sites. I've been on a pretty steep learning journey over the last 12 months and am beginning more and more to investigate and incorporate web2.0 tools into my classroom practice. One of our favourite sites to use is a uk site called sebastian swan ... here you will find books to read online, linked webquests, teaching plans, questions, ideas for use in the classroom and so much more. We have read a few of these books online and the interactivity of the resource makes them great to use with an interactive whiteboard. Another great site is an Australian site from the sunshine state of Queensland. Beenleigh State school offers great literacy resources and also many more across the curriculum. Have you checked out Roy the Zebra - great interactive resource for shared and guided reading with loads of teacher support. The Woodlands literacy zone is another great resource I visit often.
Looking forward to visiting here more and sharing the love as they say. Cheers. Trish
