Have you looked at The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series? They seem to be gaining popularity among kids of this age who enjoy fantasy stories. My kids recently read The Alchemyst and The Magician.

I was afraid you might have to track him down since it was an older post. Tim, your new course sounds like a science teachers dream.

My 10-year old loved Here There Be Dragons..trilogy (Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica). I listed it in my recommended reading for tweens here - http://www.thesmartbean.com/magazine/after-school-enrichment/recommended-fiction-for-tweens-9-...

Nancy, Sounds like a winner, I'll look into it. Would you be interested in doing a video book chat when we are finished, if we decide to read it? Do you have Skype in your classroom? N

Actually I used an audio book. The author is English and his accent wonderfully enhances the story -- plus it gives me an additional discussion point. The kids begged me to not stop. they wanted to do nothing but listen to the story. A couple of k...

Thanks Nancy, I'll ask you the same question--did you read it aloud? How old are your kids?

You may want to consider "Here There Be Dragons" by James A. Owen. It is not a traditional dragon book. It's full of mythology, history and the most amazing twist at the end. (Want to know how the Loch Ness monster got there? This book tells you -...

Welcome

Three years ago I saw this picture in Newsweek magazine. I was so enthralled by the picture I emailed the Dutch photographer, Reinout van den Bergh, and ask him for permission to use the photo in a workshop I was presenting. His Dutch agent, Arjen Duijts, gave his permission then and has given his permission again to use the image in our blog.

From student blog:
Look at this boy in Cameroon, Africa and think about what you see. Think about how this boy must live. Once you have considered the life this boy must lead, look at the item in his hand that he has made out of mud. What do you think it is? What does this picture say about our society. Write your blog entry after thinking for a few minutes.

A Very Old Place

I have a blog that is very pretty and nobody ever comes to visit. A Very Old Place focuses on using primary sources in the classroom. If you like old stuff--documents, photos, emphermera or you like to use images in your teaching you might like to take a peek.

I love using primary sources in the classroom. When I was designing my students' blog site header I found tons of pictures of "old" classrooms. When I was a kid (in the mid-50s) there were 35 students in my elementary classes. I've had people tell me than in their parochial elementary classes there would be 50 students! When I first started teaching in 1971, I had 36 fifth graders in my class and didn't think a thing about it. Hard to believe in

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the quick reply and the colleague invite. I saw that right away. Where do I control who can send me messages? I can not find where I am restricting it to friends only.

Hi Nancy I rec'd an email on 11/5 saying that Abigail Martin has added me as a colleague and an email on 11/8 saying that Goodness added a comment to my page. However, I do not see any comments, and I can't tell where I look to see if I've been added as a colleague. I'm new at this and looking for some help navigating my way around. Thanks Carolyn

Hi Nancy, Wondering about the collaboration between Classroom 2.0 and PBS to do webinars via elluminate. We do professional development with teachers via elluminate for the Museum of Modern Art - so I am wondering about a possible collaboration...
Thoughts?

Hi Nancy,

I'm looking to talk to someone about classroom 2.0 who might be able to help us build out our NING/education site www.innerkids.ning.com. Do you have any ideas who I should contact. Thanks.

Nancy, I see you are a Host and I'm wondering if you can help me out. I want to create an RSS feed from my School 2.0 page and place it on my school district blog but I don't see a feed generator on School 2.0

Thanks in advance, Mel

Hello Nancy,

I am a newbie to social networking. I recently joined Ning. I have a question: In order to send a comment to a member who replied to another member's post, do I have to invite him/her to be my colleague??? I wanted to ask this person for additional information about the topic discussed.

Another question: In Classroom 2.0 introduction, you mentioned that new members must be approved but until then we can peruse the site and join the beginners group.
How do we know when we have been approved so we can introduce ourself???

Thanks for your response,

Cassandra
