Ian, My favorite type of children's novel is the one that inspires the reluctant reader to become an avid reader, it really doesn't matter what it is. I had several very reluctant readers (albiet gifted mathematicians) in my 6th grade gifted ed cl...

Jeannie, I think Kev's website does a great job of laying out tech related activities--I liked it so much I've copied his idea (with permission) and am working on activities appropriate for my students. The work in progress can be seen here

Welcome

Three years ago I saw this picture in Newsweek magazine. I was so enthralled by the picture I emailed the Dutch photographer, Reinout van den Bergh, and ask him for permission to use the photo in a workshop I was presenting. His Dutch agent, Arjen Duijts, gave his permission then and has given his permission again to use the image in our blog.

From student blog:
Look at this boy in Cameroon, Africa and think about what you see. Think about how this boy must live. Once you have considered the life this boy must lead, look at the item in his hand that he has made out of mud. What do you think it is? What does this picture say about our society. Write your blog entry after thinking for a few minutes.

A Very Old Place

I have a blog that is very pretty and nobody ever comes to visit. A Very Old Place focuses on using primary sources in the classroom. If you like old stuff--documents, photos, emphermera or you like to use images in your teaching you might like to take a peek.

I love using primary sources in the classroom. When I was designing my students' blog site header I found tons of pictures of "old" classrooms. When I was a kid (in the mid-50s) there were 35 students in my elementary classes. I've had people tell me than in their parochial elementary classes there would be 50 students! When I first started teaching in 1971, I had 36 fifth graders in my class and didn't think a thing about it. Hard to believe in

Hi Nancy

I'm a newbie to the site and the first message I receive is from the Hilton Hotel in London asking me to 'please' work there and offering to pay my flight and visa fare!!!
I do remeber having to wait for my approval, so what about this obviously NON educational content???
If there are NO filters on this site I will be unsubscribing very soon.
Please let me know what the site safety protocols are and who is supposed to be vetting of content.

Hi, Nancy -- I'm writing to see if you can help me. I'm new to Classroom 2.0 I've read your posting policies but want to know if it's kosher to post something like what I've pasted below. I don't want to be doing the wrong thing. This seems like such a great resource for teachers.
Thanks for your help -- Lisa

Hi, everyone,
I'm Lisa Miller, and I'm a professor of journalism at the University of New Hampshire, where I also teach a digital storytelling class for K-12 teachers. I've been working in elementary classrooms over the last year and am writing a book on digital storytelling for elementary teachers. I want to interview other teachers who've done digital storytelling projects, using Photo Story 3, with their students, and also perhaps feature student projects in the book (with student/parent/teacher permission, of course). If you're anywhere near New Hampshire, I'd be glad to come help out in your classroom!

Hey Nancy,

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country!

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal. More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules.

We'd love to have your kids involved. Do you mind passing my message along to students and your HS colleagues again? I'll try gifteducation, too.

Thanks,
Jack

Nancy - I seem to recall a link, I think from you, about an egg mailing activity. Does that sound familiar and is that something you can email the link to? Thank you!

Nancy, thank you for the links. The sites are a great idea. I am looking for something that will allow the students to share links with each other. Frequently there are 10 different main topics that the kids are researching for persuasive writing. The students pick their own topics and thesis sentences and then I try to gather links that are with in their reading levels. I don't have a way for them to easily share links. I am trying to set up blogs for the project they are about to start, so they can submit a link if they find it.

Nancy,
I am a newbie to web 2.0 , but love the concept! I have always been a fan of authentic assessments , but at times I find the readability of articles and the search process challenging for fifth and sixth- grade students. I frequently make theses long documents of possible links for their various choices . When I first found delicious I thought this was a great alternative, for students to share bookmarks. I am wondering if there is a social bookmarking sight that helps you set up folders like delicious does? Do you know of any? I have found edutagger , but it does not seem as good.

Yes, I am at a college and I am just now exploring all of this 2.0 stuff. Better late than never I guess. So, do you know if I can add a video or photos to one particular group exclusively? I do not want what I add to groups to be on my main page and I cannot seem to get around that. I will try the site you suggested also. Thanks! I am a bit overwhelmed, but anxious to learn!
