I spoke to a nice young lady this week who seemed like she would be qualified to replace me at my old job. She'd been a teacher for a few years and she had previous experience in the tech field. My former principal thought it would be more effective if I would show this candidate around and explain what it's like to be a tech coordinator. She seemed excited and by the end of our conversation we were speaking to each other as if she already had the position. I was very relieved. We've got a…

On June 23rd, I made a list of what I wanted to learn from NECC 2007. It's one thing to look forward to an exciting event/opportunity but it's another to actually sit down and decide so what were the actual results. What did I come away with from the NECC 2007 conference? Below is a list of what I wanted to learn with a note of how that happened or not.
- my "horizons" expanded -…

I know this is going to sound like a plug and I suppose it is, but apart from having just registered at the site, I have no connection with them.
At http://dotsub.com members upload videos, which can then have subtitles added to them in other languages.
The subtitles are also created by members of the site. The tool used for doing this is very simple and easy to use.
So if you create videos for education or you would like world students…

This is a tale from Archeology, but I think it says a lot about sexism. In the 1920's, a tomb was discovered in Egypt that contained two mummies of women, one regal and beautiful, the other old and obese. The beautiful mummy was removed and taken to the museum in Cairo; the other was buried in sand and left. In the 1990's, speculation was made that one of these woman might be the missing pharaoh Hatshepsut, a…

I look forward to the time that I can travel across the ocean again to learn more about different cultures and educational perspectives!! London and Barcelona were very inspiring on a variety of different levels. Participating in the London Doctoral Conference and the English Strand of the Barcelona Conference enabled me to refine and enhance my research techniques and enhanced my motivation to continually strive to improve teacher education. I learned much and laughed often!! I miss those…

I've been following what are now called social networks right from the start. As an English as a foreign language teacher, I soon realized that they could be one way of solving one of the essential problems of learning a foreign language, namely communicating with real live speakers (and writers) who use the language as it is used daily, not as textbooks and professional teachers water it down to help learners learn it, or even as newspapers or news broadcasts transform it to suit their needs.…

My wife has been warning me for years...."Watch what you say, you never know who might be listening". In a moment of utter isolationism, while running updates on our high schools computer inventory, I decided to reply to one of Kevin Honeycutt's
"Driving Questions". A week later there I am, sitting atop iTunes educational podcasts in all my glory. It is always fun when you find someone with the foresight to include those of us from the…

Though my blog has had a meltdown the last two weeks, I HAVE been blogging Necc 2007 on a site called tumblr, which is very handy for quickly posting things.
IF you want to check it out, or read about some sessions at NECC, check it out at www.technolibrary.tumblr.com.
It's been great getting to meet people in person, get inspired, and meet new people.
We're leaving and heading back to campus with a plan to start a women…

Yesterday I posted something about my
Roman Emperor widget and lo and behold this morning I got a nice email from a Latin teacher in Catalonia who has added my widgets to his blog (
Blogum iactum est). That is SO EXCITING! I create these widgets for use in my own pages and online courses, but the best part about them is that anybody else can use them, too. I'm…

So I sitting here- eating a sandwich at NEC 2007 and the conference is beginning to wind down. I’m reflecting on how I enjoyed this conference and I'm beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed. This is a strange feeling for me because I'm usually very secure and comfortable a events like this. I KNOW WHAT I KNOW!!
Enter Web 2.0, now I'm not so comfortable anymore. There's so much happening in terms of new technologies, collaboration, and ways to engage students. I'm just not comfortable wit…

Dean Shareski has an interesting post about summer holidays. As Dean comments
For me though, I don’t get as excited as I once did about June and it’s not just that I haven’t spend 185 days with kids, although that does make a difference, but as I said before, I still
longed for summer vacation even after I left…

Hi everybody! Happy Tuesday! I just published a new widget at my collection of javascript widgets and gadgets over at SchoolhouseWidgets.com. I have so much fun every time I publish one of these, and I would be very curious what members of this ning community think about widgets as a way to share content.
Basically, I am a content-generating machine (it's fun for me, and…

Frustration set in as I had a presentation and my keynote would not go fullsize on the projection screen.
So I punted and it went ok but the tech visuals would have added so much.
My grandson is now living with me and job hunting with some effort but needs more push. he will attend the local two year college here.
Next month will be spent planning how to add technology to my upper dviisons in a meaningful way.
any ideas you wnat to share?

Well, we made it through our first Summer Academy - whew! The teachers were very patience and lot of fun. We covered a LOT of material, but in the end I think everyone went away with something they can use in their classroom. To see some of their great work, go to
North Fork SA 07 Final Projects .
Thanks Alexa, Larry, Peggy and all of the teachers for their hard work!

This video inspired some great conversation with some colleagues about education as a whole. This is what we are competing against for "school work" time.
