A Tale of Two Activities

Tale 1

I attended what I thought was going to be an informal gathering of tech types (teachers, animation artists, web developers, small tech business owners) and was astounded to see every presenter pull out their computer and do a formal presentation for 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of questions. The audience passively conformed, rarely commenting, occasionally questioning. The meeting was held in a local bar back room just to add to how bizarre this is and people pulled the… Continue

My New wiki on Active Learning

I created a wiki on Active Learning with Technology for a seminar I was facilitating. There are some great video examples of elementary students using active technology. http://technologyactivelearning.pbwiki.com/

It's a wiki wonderland!

I like to use wikis for much of the work that I do. I think that they allow me a great deal of freedom to be creative in their construction without being overwhelming, give me just enough gadgets

and plug-ins to keep me busy and suit my purpose when it comes to

organization and access. Right now I use one for my planning, another I used with my class last year to gather information about Medieval Europe, a…

Collaborating on the Monster

OK - Pakistan signed up and I discovered that the teacher really likes doing digital video projects, so we're working on ways to incorporate a monster theme into kid-created videos with the Karachi kids - an offshoot of the main collaborative effort to build a friendly monster based on the descriptions of 20 or so elementary classrooms from around the globe - and be done by Halloween! Taiwan kids are emailing, Japanese kids sending drawings through the mail, even have a group of the "littlest… Continue

Safety In Schools

Welcome to my blog! I'm going to write an ongoing blog regarding safety and technology in schools, and how we can use technology to augment the most important facets of our safety strategies. Never before has safety been more on the forefront of our minds as parents, teachers, and administrators. There are so many thing we can do to improve safety, that a frank, and open discussion about our schools' policies and practices can only lead to positive results. I plan on covering…

Monday Blues Not in my book

So today, I was back to school after recovering from an awful tonsil infection that left me literally speechless. I had gone to bed late the night before and I have no idea where the energy came to get up this morning and continue vigorously throughout the whole day. I checked in with my cooperating teacher and she gave me a run down of what had happend on Friday. There a few house things to deal with such as finishing up handouts and such. I was able to jump right in with my new unit on… Continue

Voicethread

Voicethread is a new web 2.0 application that gives the user the ability to combine audio with photos in a unique manner. You post your photo story with comments and others can add "voicethreads" to your story, to give one picture many view points. The software is very easy to use and seems effective at what it does. Give it a try, it is worth looking at. At very least it has restored my faith in ease of use for 2.0 applications. Here is a link… Continue

More on Voicethread

This Friday when one of my colleagues was looking for a good 2.0 program to use with her digital photography class, she looked a Flickr, I guaranteed it world be blocked in the Ohio K- 12 environment, it was, and then suggested she look at Voicethread. Reluctantly she agreed and discovered this is a nice bit of software. It encourages storyboarding and reflective writing by its nature and…

High School Progress Teams

Yesterday I spent the day at Copper Hills high school at the High School Progress Team meetings. I have been involved in these three-time-a-year

meetings for the past three years, and, although I don't like to leave

my classroom in the hands of a substitute teacher, they are really

productive.

Every high… Continue

Create "Hotspots" in Videos

I've posted this on my blog, but thought people in the greater Classroom 2.0 community might find it useful, too.

The latest site I've learned about is called Asterpix. It allows you to take any video posted on the Internet and easily create "hotspots" in it that allow viewers to click on it and get more information. Here's an…

Helping Diminish the Digital Divide

For several months now I've had a site dedicated to making Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) information available to folks that might need it. It's located at http://toss-elptx.blogspot.com/ - The Texas Open Source Software contains not only links to equivalent sites (open-source sites for proprietary products,) but if you look around, there are references to sites providing .iso images for Macs and PCs, as well as arguments and… Continue

Who do you want me to be?

“Who do you want me to be?”

That’s what my oldest daughter asked me today. It was a question that came during a heated discussion.

“Just tell me and I’ll do it!”

Each of us has had those moments when we wish someone would just tell us how to act or what to do so we could do it and avoid the difficult journey in discovering for ourselves who we are. As an

educational leader and school administrator, I’ve had a few moments

like that over the years. “If someone…

ELL, ESL, & EFL Carnival

This has also been posted on my blog:

It's time for the first "ELL, ESL, & EFL Carnival," where teachers and others have submitted posts that they thought were particularly helpful and insightful in teaching English as a Second Language.

And a pretty impressive batch they were (and are).

I'd also like to propose that we do this Carnival bimonthly -- more or less. Which means the deadline for the next one would be…

K12 Online Conference -- a new adventure

My friend, Bonnie, and I are presenting at this year’s K12 Online Conference and we hope to show folks how we used the tools of Web 2.0 to create a learning environment for other educators as part of our Collaborative

ABC Movie Project. We’re a bit mystified about how the conference will

go but we are confident we can handle it, and already have some great

ideas brewing for folks who “attend” our virtual workshop.…
