What's in your iPhone? Let others know.

Well, let's see, I have more than 80+ apps including:

But that's not the cool thing about this post. I accidently took a screenshot of my iPhone page and couldn't figure out how I did it. (After playing around a bit more, I figured it out - of course, I… Continue

"Infants have no privilege to cheat men" -Peter King

The biggest reason cited for prohibition of cell phones and/or iPods in school is cheating. As technology continues to evolve, so are the creative ways students devise to beat the system (check out my personal favorite, #8)

It's no secret technology is everywhere, and as a result, so is information. If you have a cell phone, you can get an answer… Continue

IRL, being online IRL, being online in classroom life

So, am I the only teacher who suffers from some peculiar kind of dissonance in keeping all the parts of my life separate? I can't imagine so.

I was thinking about this as I decided that I needed an online way to keep track of my novel outline - something visual that I have have open and refer to as I write. Of course, I'm writing my novel for NaNoWriMo, because even novel writing is best done through social networking. So this… Continue

Quote of the week

"Scratch the surface in a typical boardroom and we're all just cavemen with briefcases, hungry for a wise person to tell us stories."

NECC Presentation Submitted - FIngers crossed:)

I finished preparing and submitted a presentation for NECC 2009 late last night. I hope to share the process my Biology students use to organize thoughts and describe why they organize things. My fingers are crossed as I know I have to wait until mid-December until notifications are sent. Having attended the last two NECC events, I would love to go again.

Cell phones for education purposes?

I recently came across a really good post by Steve Dembo (Teach42) titled: My cell phone can beat up your laptop." It's a great write-up about his most recent cell phone (no plug for the Nokia N95) and the many applications for both teachers and students. In the process, he explores the many many applications for cell phones in the classroom. I was fascinated by the brief… Continue

Coming to grips with Generation Y

We all get exasperated with our students sometimes and that's what led me to buy a new book. My latest blog entry reflects on the book and the importance of understanding the generation of students we have in our classrooms - "What happens when X, Y, and Z collide?"

Thank You for Kids Can Do

A local organization offered grant opportunities for students interested in community service projects. My students completely surprised me with their interest in building park benches to replace broken ones near a local lake. And guess what, they were awarded funds to complete their project. I'm so proud of them.

These "Kids" Today

I'm growing increasingly frustrated with the entering freshman classes here at my university. The lack of respect, the lack of courtesy, the presumption that they own ALL of my time, not taking responsibility for their own education, not writing down assignments, continually asking what's due when, asking what did they miss when they were gone...

I love the transformation that occurs during the 1st year of college. I enjoy being part of that process, and since I am a younger… Continue

As I gear up for the last push of the 2008 school year I logged on this afternoon and had some of my reservations about the cyberdrama project alleviated. To check out how my students motivate me to keep going see my latest blog entry "On Your Marks..."
