About Me:: I am in my last quarter of my teacher certification program at the UWB before I begin my full-time student teaching.
I am very interested in grounding my classroom in social justice and technology. I believe the two go hand-in-hand.
Besides the classroom, my other favorite places are all outside, except of course my bed. I love hiking, biking, and playing in general.

What is social justice?

This was a question posed to our class by a professor the other day. Is social justice a set of specific values that people hold? Should they try to push "values" of social justice on other people? Does it have a place in our schools? Should students be made to participate in social justice? Are teachers instruments of social justice?

a step and then another...and another

I am excited every day the kids begin arriving in the morning. I get so much energy from them. There were moments halfway through my cert program when I questioned if I was in fact doing the right thing. Do I really have what it takes to educate future citizens? What makes me equipped for such a job?

That's exciting news about starting your 6 weeks so soon; are you comfortable with everything? I start my 6 weeks after the WASL, and it will include a math investigations unit, FOSS, a Houghton Mifflin reading unit, and yet another start-from-scratch social studies unit on the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. That unit will need to include reading non-fiction and lots of writing.
I have no clear idea about my first ss unit I'm planning, but I'm going to start with the EALRs and then brainstorm some enduring understandings. Next, I'll design a summative assessment and work backwards from there. I don't know what it will end up looking like, but I'm starting it in the morning. -)

Things are going really well at my new school. While I'm on break, I am building a 6 week social studies unit on the continents, the regions of the U.S., the state of Washington, and finally, Redmond. It will be both a fun and scary process, because the subject matter is wide open; it's up to me to decide what to teach.

While I don't have an answer for that, I might have a great "student-teacher resume builder activity" for you : ) Here is what I was going to post...if you are not interested let me know and I will post to the entire board.

Anyone looking for a low key distance collaboration project? In March my students are writing a series of “children’s books” for another school and we decided to practice writing one on our current unit the “War of 1812 – Star Spangled Banner.” Most basically tell how our flag became an important symbol because of this War and gives the background on the origins of the Star Spangled Banner. I was wondering if anyone would like to buddy up with us and let us send you the books in exchange for some written or audio constructive criticism by the students who read them. It would be easy to incorporate into your class : ) The books are all about twenty pages. Each page with a picture and 1-3 sentences. I could have each of my kids include a link to their wiki page and your kids could leave comments on it, or create a blog post on each student's blog and they can be left there, or do it live via a skype/ustream/yak pak sort of connection. Because of time constraints, these books would be more like an advanced copy, rather than a final draft totally and completely polished. We are just looking for are they interesting? Can an elementary student make sense of the story? Looking more for help from “editors” rather than “critics.” That sort of thing…I would probably have around 75 books. My guess is that they would be readable for 2nd grade and up.
