I think it's a Vista feature - it comes on when it thinks there's a tablet pc/touchscreen connected I think you can turn it off via Control Panel -> Pen and Input Devices

Danny Nicholson replied to Greg R. Fishbone's discussion 'Probe into teacher Twitter posts'
I think the news report is a big over-reaction, having seen the posts by the teacher concerned. But it does open up the discussion - as teachers, do we need to be careful about what we say on twitter so that we do not open ourselves up for similar…

Danny Nicholson replied to Debbie Wilson's discussion 'Smart Boards vs. Promethean'
There's already been a long discussion on this subject here: http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topics/smartboard-or-promethean might be worth tacking onto the end of that rather than starting it all again... and to be honest it's hard to…

Smart Notebook for all IWB Users?

Posted on July 2, 2009 at 2:06pm 0 Comments

I wrote back in the Spring about how Promethean were changing the nature of the IWB market with a change in the way their ActivInspire software was licenced so that you could use a cut-down version on other brands of Interactive Whiteboard.

Well it looks as though Smart are now following along similar lines with the release of Smart Notebook Express.

Smart Notebook Express will be released in the Autumn and will allow anyone to access Smart Notebook resources “regardless… Continue

InFocus Liteboard – an IWB replacement?

Posted on July 2, 2009 at 2:00pm 0 Comments

I’ve seen a few IWB-replacement gadgets over the years, but these normally rely on setting up some kind of alternative gadget to pick up pen movement – such as the ebeam, or a camera placed somewhere in the room. All of these needed calibration and extra devices, and are just plain cumbersome. Good for a mobile system, but not really an IWB replacement for a classroom.

But this video shows something very interesting indeed using a new InFocus projector, and nothing… Continue

Year 6 Literacy Ideas

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 2:00am 0 Comments

I was emailed over the weekend by a year 6 teacher who wanted some ideas for using ICT with his class, and in particular for literacy.

I set up an Etherpad to collate ideas and threw the question out to my network of Twitter friends. I invited them to visit the Etherpad and add their thoughts.

You can see the results of the collaboration here:… Continue

Teacher2Teacher Conference – Canada 2010

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 12:30pm 0 Comments

Just a little bit of advance notice, and some exciting news for me! If you are in or near Alberta, Canada next March then I will be speaking at the Teacher2Teacher conference on 18th and 19th March 2010.

I’m very excited about it since I don’t get to do too many conferences abroad plus I have a real soft spot to Canada (I’m actually heading to Calgary for my Summer holidays later this year). My Canadian friends have advised me to bring my thermals as it may be rather chilly in… Continue

Google Squared in the Classroom

Posted on June 23, 2009 at 12:18pm 0 Comments

Google have recently rolled out a new twist on their search engine in their continued bid for world domination – Google Squared.

Google Squared takes a category and creates a starter ’square’ of information, automatically fetching and organizing facts from across the web and producing them in spreadsheet format. You can then add additional columns and rows to this grid of information (if more info is available)

Hi Danny,

Thanks for quick response. I did have look before at the time website you've recommend, I think it's brilliant. I don't have any way of viewing the kind of time lesson each of these boards have. Can you direct me to a link?( some t teachers in the UK report of having difficulty in teaching children the concept of time. As a result I am currently doing research into developing an aspect of time application for both boards. I am doing my MSc in Interaction design. I have been looking at the time web site and would like to incorporate this in my application. ( I was thinking instead of teachers looking at various resources to teach time, why not incorporate most of them in an application) What do you think about this? Your comments are really helpful to me.

Hi Danny,

I have an interest in the interactive white board. Can you suggest to me what is the best way to go about teaching 6-7 year old time?
Can I use the interactive white board to demonstrate the concept of time to them? Have you encountered any problems in this area?
