Blanca replied to Edith Zimmermann's discussion 'Ipad info???'
For me the advantage of the iPad is two fold. It is able to capture voice to text using Dragon Dictation. With a headset I have found it to be over 95% accurate. Speak may or may not be an issue for your child. The other benefit is that the child…

Blanca commented on Simon McIntyre's video
Simon, I just took a look at the project and some of the videos on the website you shared. Worth more time than I have at the moment but just from the two videos I watched, I thought the concept of online learning was professionally articulated.…

Blanca commented on Keith Mitchell's blog post 'Community Building for STEM Educators'
Hi Keith, I too am a STEM coordinator in NYS, but for one of the local universities that provides services for students in Grades 7-12. The state is putting together a website to collect resources so for a statewide initiative I certainly would love…

About Me
I am an educational technology specialist working in NY. Extremely interested in the educational and social impact of technology in society, I enjoy observing one-to-one implementations around the country and looking at the data that drives their success. As an advocate for child care and educational reform, my belief is that assessment is key when looking at ways to redirect the way students are taught in schools today. I have seen amazing works and talked to amazing people in states other than NY and strive to make connections with people who can help move New York along in the area of assessment and instructional technology. A child of immigrant parents who came to this country legally, I also feel there are great social influences in this country that create additional challenges in the way of instruction. As economic and immigration policy begins to take form I would also like to connect with policy makers interested in studying the effects of education of our "silent" students. "Silent" only because of their lack of voting rights, not silent in their contributions and influences in society.

Hey Blanca,

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country. And from what I've heard, students had a good time and learned some tough vocab. Some kids even discovered a passion for hamming it up in front of the camera and started video clubs.

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal. More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules.

We'd love to have your kids involved. If it's not a good fit for them, maybe you have some colleagues you could pass our info to.

Thanks,
Jack

Blanca, I have extended a invitation to our Ning STEM network. We are just getting started as you will see. I do not plan to extend invitations to most of our very large STEM community until there is a little more content and sharing going on. We are working on some ideas to promote more lurkers to contributors! The TRC manages STEM professional development in Texas with MSP dollars. Similar dollars also fund the TSTEM project. We are exploring how to broaden our network to reach all STEM educators in Texas.

Hi Blanca. I was wondering if you and your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. If not, perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, Blanca! Sorry we couldn't talk more, but that's what cyberspace is for, right? I guess my advantage is that I would rather "ask for forgiveness than permission" and Dr. M has been very cool about that. Anyway, onward we go into the future...keep up YOUR good work too!
