The beginning of my research

The following was written the beginning of September. We were asked to start coming up with ideas of what we wanted to do for our research, in my grad level class. Now I will be honest, I found it a bit wierd to do this, since it was a grade level course, but I am thankful that the research advisor had us do this.…

Sacramento Bee Story on Technology and ESL

I thought people might be interested in an article the Sacramento Bee just wrote about our school's family literacy project of providing home computers and DSL service to immigrant families.

Embracing Change

As I have been preparing for Tuesday's Secondary Quarterly Meeting, I've been doing a lot of reading. I've attached an article by Mike Schmoker that I commend to you. Schmoker is a passionate advocate for effective teachers and effective teaching.

In his book, Results Now, he argues that in most schools and districts a "buffer" exists which works against innovation and improvement.

"…school culture and supervision tend to ignore or divert teachers from implementing and… Continue

Letter for online etiquette ?

Hi fellow educators !
Could anyone provide me with an example of a letter to parents for
blogging safely with students or at least the key ideas? I'd rather not
invent the wheel, and I may not know all the good points to make.
I want to protect them and myself as much as possible from any
ramifications. Thanks!

Loose Ends from a Conference

I had the pleasure of being a keynote speaker (my first time!) at a conference around technology and writing at the Hudson Valley Writing Project on Saturday. It was a wonderful group of teachers and soon-to-be-teachers who were interested in this convergence of technology and writing in the classroom.

In the interest of sharing, here is my keynote address (if I cut out my Ummms and Uhhhhs, it would probably be about 10 minutes shorter than it is). Anyway, here is the podcast of my… Continue

Collaborating with 4th/5th graders

I am a tech teacher of 4th and 5th graders (& other things). I am trying to find ways to

give many of our students an audience for their work. Many of them are

struggling readers/writers. They might create better pieces of writing

if other students from around the world are reading their work. I have

students who are creating web pages through pbwiki.com. We would love

to have a sort of "pen-pal" who can view our work and leave comments on who they

are and what… Continue

Sorry!

My laptop has been out of commission for the last few weeks. To those of you who are waiting (patiently) for Voicethreads I am sorry. I hope to be back in the loop shortly. With any luck , our bear project will continue to flourish. Let me know if you want to still receive "Ted".

Where Have You Been?

I feel I should have posted many many days ago, and I really wanted to blog while I was at the Oracle 21st Century Learning Institute in San Francisco, yet I ended up spending my free time there writing back and forth to my students. They were so sweet to IM and email me all week. W needed that more than usual because of a tragedy that happened while I was gone. (Two of my former students were shot in a murder-suicide, so our whole community was in a lot of pain. Please pray for the families if… Continue

University and College 2.0

Rekindling some of my thoughts on what is needed for University and College students to be "job ready" when they leave school.

I have never felt that traditional University or Colleges can keep up with technology, this is one of the reasons why I never achieved a formal university training.

As a career technology professional I find it very difficult to keep up with technology while being right in the middle of it, let alone if your within a university that is on a slower… Continue
