Summer is a Time for New Ideas

Although many of us enjoy taking time to relax and recharge, this is also a good time to reconnect with old Classroom 2.0 friends and to make new ones. This is when I have the space to think about ways to change/update curriculum in meaningful ways for my 3rd graders. This summer I have also been given a grant for a school-wide learning experience with food. This project will have lessons, speakers, field trips, curricular tie-ins, and hands on experiences. It will encompass sustainability, nut… Continue

Teaching Kids to Write Fiction

I am trying to invite other teachers to visit my blog in order to collect some ideas for my summer grant project! I am rehabbing the fiction writing unit in my 3rd grade class, but I also want to share ideas with my colleagues about what others are doing. Please link here to my blog called Life in Lower School. Stay tuned for a link to my wiki that will contain my notes about the book I am reading on this subject, Writing the Whole Story by Kare… Continue

Hi Amy,
Happy to make your acquaintance. Often my picture scares folks off. It was taken near Leland, MI., where I found my first Petosky stone. I tell my students it was taken when I helped Lewis and Clark find a route to the Pacific Ocean.
I know how very blessed I am to have access to so many tools. But along the way, I have learned to make do with very little. I have built a learning network called the Husky Howler Network. You can check it out at http://web.mac.com/g4husky
We have done many projects with classes. Some of the teachers only have access to a computer at home.
Happy to share ideas but perhaps our kids could share a project or two during the school year.
Best,
Rick

I love these types of bookmaking projects: http://www.vickiblackwell.com/makingbooks.html
There's also a web2.0 tool that allows students to create books and publish if they want online: http://beta.tikatok.net/
To practice writing according to text structure, this site is really great: http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/writingfun/writingfun.html

Hey Amy! Saw a comment of yours on someone else's wall. I'm right in your neighborhood, working out of Evanston and living in Skokie. If you ever want to have some coffee and talk tech, let me know!

Hi Amy
Well, I embed in Edublogs through the little "A" button on the text tool bar. If it is a YouTube or GoogleVid, you click that button and it asks for the web address of the video, and then it does all the work for you (love that).
Using TeacherTube is a bit more difficult, in that you need to grab the special edublog code from TeacherTube, and then go into the Code of the post, and put it in that way. I have found, however, that TT videos take a long time to buffer.
Let me know how it goes and if I can provide any further help.
Peace,
Kevin

Hi Amy! I'm just getting back in the swing of things, after dealing with some health issues. I'm working o my Read, Write, Publish project with three fifth grade teachers. One is in Year 2 of the project and the others are juststarting. They will all start using blogs with their kids this month. I actually do my first true lesson on blogs on Monday. I think it will be fun.

Hi Amy, Sounds like you've had a good start to the new school year. In Australia we are two thirds the way through our school year with our next break of two weeks in four more weeks - can't you see I'm counting down! After that we have nine weeks till the end of the year. We have our long vacation in December - January for 6 weeks.
I have started my class blog now and the kids are enthusiastic about publishing their writing and having a chance to share it with their families.
I decided to use classblogmeister a it seemed easier to use and had security that was acceptable to my principal as far as privacy etc goes . You can see the main page at:
http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=98041
but the kids pages are password protected.
