I always look forward to spending some quality reading time during the summer and am looking for recommendations. Please recommend your favorite educational book and "just for fun" reads for teachers.

If you haven't checked out the "Books that Matter" group, you might want to.

My recommendations would include Three Cups of Tea and Wikinomics.
This is perfect - thanks!!
I'm listening to Three Cups of Tea on my MP3--I was thinking to myself this morning how much I've enjoyed it since there are 100's of Pakistani names which I wouldn't know how to pronounce---

I mentioned a (non educational) book I'm getting ready to read here. I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.
Might I suggest Leaving Microsoft to Change the World by John Wood.
I'd highly recommend "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch and "Big Russ and Me" by Tim Russert. Both are excellent books - and not just for teachers. Fun books to read with great points about life!
We're having this same conversation in our Elementary Reading Teachers group. Check out our responses so far at http://www.classroom20.com/group/elementaryreadingteachers/forum
If you have not read Teaching with Love and Logic, it's a great read and I highly recommend it for all teachers.

If you are looking for fun books just to enjoy, Shoe Addicts Anonymous is just a joyful fun read. It's also in paperback, so it can go poolside and doesn't take up much space in a carry on bag.
My favorite book about teaching is an inspirational memoir called Educating Esme about a woman's first year in the classroom. Its wonderful and funny!
I'm sure most of you have either heard of or read The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. If you have not read it - you can get it for free on audio. I was reading his blog today and notice that beginning tomorrow, and running through August 4th, Farrar, Straus and Giroux and Macmillan Audio will be offering the audio edition of Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat for free.

Listeners will receive the audiobook in three easy-to-download sections, and soon after that, as an added bonus, will also receive an exclusive prepublication audio excerpt of Friedman's Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America. The book itself will be released by Farrar, Straus and Giroux on September 8th.

Jeff Seroy, Senior Vice President of marketing and publicity at FSG, said the purpose of this audio giveaway is to "celebrate Friedman's enormous influence on our lives and times. And in preparation for the release of his new book, a green manifesto and a continuation in many ways of his thinking in The World Is Flat, we want to enable anyone who hasn't already read The World Is Flat to catch up with Friedman's argument and vision for the future."

How about "Teaching for Tomorrow" by Ted McCain, Corwin Press.

Short and concise with some very insightful thoughts about how we have learned to teach.

I'm reading Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody.

He examines the social impact of Web 2.0.
Try What Works in Classroom Instruction. It is free provided by the Dept of Education. It is a very interesting and surprising books about instructional strategies.
