The Blog of Ms. Mercer

It’s all about the network…

After spending a week being super wired at Discovery Communication’s corporate headquarters, and then another three days in a much less tech-oriented setting, it gave me a great opportunity to think about different kinds of social networks. First we have online networks. We like these people in part because we have a common interest that is [...]

More from DEN National Institute

First, we’re going to start off with the video interviews I did with various from DEN including Lance Rougeaux, Hall Davidson, and Scott McKinney and from the DEN Stars themselves: The important ideas are about building relationships, and building integration between streaming and Web 2.0 to help us learn, and lead to students being engaged and [...]

DEN National Institute Day One

I did not manage to live blog because we were doing a “hands on project” making a movie for our regional DEN group to the “I Love the Mountains” song that is being used on the new Discovery Channel video. After listening to the song over, and over, it is pretty much stuck in my [...]

Thank you Nancy Pratt and David Warlick

I wanted to share a time from NECC and the Bloggers’ Cafe that I think got it right in the mix of “NYFB” and “FBs”. On Monday night (June 29), Lisa Parisi (middle above), and Cheryl Lykowski (right above) did an episode of Teachers are Talking from the Bloggers’ Cafe. The cafe was full, [...]

Feds to eliminate tech funding?

Cross-posted at The Blog of Ms. Mercer

Okay, now that I have your attention, I’ll point you to this post http://www.speedofcreativity.org/2007/04/20/margaret-spellings-is-under-fire/ from guest blogger Scott McLeod on Wes Fryer’s “Moving at the Speed of Creativity” (not faster than the average 6 month old if Spellings has her way, I guess).

Scott lists all the…

Elementary Blogging

Well, I'm starting to see more web 2.0 sites getting blocked in my district. PB Wiki (which I used for a project with my kids) is not accessible. I'm looking at some other tools to see how to incorporate them in my classroom.

There are two tools I've seen recently that have different strengths (and weaknesses):

1. Tumblr.com: a REALLY simple an intuitive blog interface. I would LOVE an interface like this for student blogs.

2. 21 classes: Recommended by Will Richardson. T…

I am relatively new here. I am from Ghana and I'm just here to learn, contribute as well as link up with like-minded people who will be willing to share their experiences as well as help in spreading the concept of distance learning and adult education to Africa, which lags behind as far as education is concerned. My company has developed a television program called 'ADULTS IN EDUCATION' which is used in teaching, especially adults, how to read and write as well as general tips on how to take care of oneself. We also treat social issues as well. Television is still the widest means of disseminating information here in Ghana

Hi Alice,
I was a part of the Edublogger discussion today hosted by Vickie Davis at Elluminate. I was referred to your page as a great reference for elementary teachers by Steve. Just looking around to see what great things I can pick up!

Hi, Alice! At my work-in-progress web page I am building as part of professional development this year for my colleagues but out there for everyone on the ethernet, I have highlighted your class web page. IfIf you would rather I didn't, I understand and will remove it. I think it's great! I'm trying to show teachers possibilities for how to use class web pages. If you have any words of wisdom to add, that would be fine, too! I am enjoying your contributions to this group very much.

Seems like you would be a good person to know. I look forward to checking out all your cool stuff. I am in the position of trying to pound the square pegs of instructional technology into the round holes of alternative education. I am looking for ways to alter the pegs so I can stop treating my blisters and get to some real student engagemnt. I think you might be a good person to know!!
