I am interested in this too. We are constantly exposed to the latest, 'essential' web 2.0 tool for the classroom. How do you know when you should use something? I think it is hard to be selective with students about which…

I teach first grade and have been using a listening center for two years now. It is great for fluency...it allows them to hear the text being read. I also use it for comprehension...whenever they listen to a book they have to do a retelling activity…

The WOW Factore

I am doing a presentation for our Student Advisory Board the week after next to present what our new SMARTboards can do. While I've been using an iwb for the past two years and feel very comfortable with it, I was looking for the WOW factor to show these parents and other administrators that will be there. If you have a Notebook file or website that will really show off the awesomness of the SB I would really appreciate the hook-up.Thanks.See More

A Prezi tutorial that I found useful was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0kriH9dKzk. It's called ice cream for everyone! I've been using Prezi for about 6 months now for P.D. and I showed it to all of my classes last semester before they…

I stumbled on Prezi a few weeks ago and saw the tutorial on their site. I still can't seem to get the handle on it. Do you know of a helpful manual, screencast or tutorial about prezi? I will also have a smart board this year and would love to…

I can see where you are going with it...I'm going to take a closer look at the website tomorrow. But it sounds good. It would be fun for our students to edit each others work too! By the way, what grade do you teach?

Hi Deanna, I teach first grade in a small town in NE Georgia. How are you planning on using the Monster Motel in your curriculum? I would love to work with you on this, but I'm struggling to see it's uses beyond something like…

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

I just finished reading the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The purpose of this discussion is to get your thoughts on how the ideas that Gladwell presents can possibly impact your teaching and your classroom.I personally am interested to look at birthdays of the different groups and they are groups by reading ability in first grade. I'm considering grouping my students by birthday at the beginning of the year before I even determine reading levels.I am not sure if our lives are molded by…See More

The video has to be converted into flv format before it can be uploaded onto the prezi presentation. I wasn't able to get it to work from YouTube but was successful with using this website.

Thank you all! I agree that playing around with it is the best way to learn. But sometimes are "hidden" things that you can do that you don't really learn from the tutorial. And Mark, I am presenting on a SMARTBoard so I hope…

The key is just to start playing with it (after the tutorial). There's also sometips out there to help you convert video that is compatible with Prezi. You'll sometimes need toupload it to YouTube and then download the convertedvideoto…

I would suggest starting out with the tutorial. It does a good job of showing you a sample presentation while letting you try out the interface. One other thing I would do is download a copy of your presentation and bring it on a USB stick, just in…

About Me
I teach first grade in a very small school in NE Georgia. I absolutely love what I do and the unexpectedness of it. Integrating technology into my classroom is very important to me, because through technology I can introduce my students to a world beyond their own backyard.

When are we going to do math?

Posted on April 29, 2009 at 6:10pm 0 Comments

We are nearing the end of the year in my first grade classroom and it's time for review, remediation, and advancement. Today we did a quick activity to review time on our iwb during math time. I used an activity on www.abcya.com for review. I put the girls against the boys because that always makes it more interesting.

About half way through while the girls are cheering their teammate on and the boys are watching hoping she gets her answer wrong one of my students looks at me and… Continue

Hi Matt,

With your interest in Technology for your first graders, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.

Here’s a Public Class on Technology Integration you might be interested in given by Nellie Deutsch.
