Cool Tools for School

Everyone likes to find a terrific Web 2.0 tool or piece of free software that makes our digital lives easier. Often these little gems aren’t earth-shaking discoveries – they just make it easi

Multimedia and Music: Remix, Reuse

Cross-posted from The Impetuous Geek By Alix E. Peshette Technology has expanded many of the traditional ideas of how students can show evidence of learning. So, it’s no surprise that many students elect to create multimedia presentations. Images, video, narration and sound tracks are combined to produce an engaging product. Naturally enough, students often share these creations onli… Continue

Being There –Panoramic Virtual Field Trips

By Alix Pehette Cross-posted from The Impetuous Geek Live, real-time field trips involve all the senses. We walk, stand and turn around to view our surroundings. We move closer to inspect an object or look to see a distant view. The experience is immersive and that’s what makes it memorable. The opportunities for field trips are often limited by funding, transportation issues and administrative paperwork. As a former 7th grade… Continue

Web 2.0 Tools for Teachers

Cross-posted from EdTech Gold Rush It’s been ages since I’ve posted a new blog entry and I feel pretty guilty about that. The machinations of the California school district budget woes have a way of holding everyone in thrall. It’s a crazy system that hands out mass lay-off and re-assignment notices in March and then blithely re-hires staff months later with the promise of going through the entire process again next year. Just one of many reasons… Continue

The Power of Digital Storytelling

By Alix E. Peshette Cross-posted from EdTech Gold Rush I’ve been absent from blogging lately as I’ve been consumed with writing an Enhancing Education through Technology grant. The proposal is to use digital storytelling with 4th–6th grade Special Education students and teachers as an English Language Arts strategy for achievement. This latest grant has come down from the California Department of Education packaged as a research project to prov… Continue

We used imovie version 6. The two students who created Undo focused mainly on "reverse" and "voice over". Thanks for comment, Alix. You're in marin? I'm in napa.

It would be great to have someone to compare notes with! I have been really working at creating podcasts of 1st person narratives for our 7th graders. I just can't seem to get it done. If there were less hoops to jump through...Oh well, I'll keep plugging away at it. Talk to you soon!

OK, will do it right now. You and I didn't get a chance to talk at SCOE, but we've corresponded before. :)

Kevin (Honeycutt) thought the canine pictured with me was a border collie, too. Shem was not a border collie, but the noblest ninety-pound mutt I've ever known personally. I used to travel from the ridges of Maryland to the Virginia Blue Ridge country (one and the same geologically) to watch much smaller border collies herd sheep at show trials. Although we lived on a small farm, Shem wasn't a trained working dog (unfortunately). He and his sister Lucy loved to chase one another around the house and were constant companions of mine. I learned other things to appreciate about Shem and Lucy, especially their emotional intelligence and awareness of mine.

Have you introduced your non-human companions to your students? Do they know how interesting a person you are? They should.

Alix, I'm listening to The Raven as I write. This is very exciting - and motivating - to be joining you on another technology adventure.

Thanks for your note on my chatterwall. Both your work and your intelligent and enthusiastic reporting of it is impressive.

The links you suggested are goods ones. The most up-do-date NGO-in-a-box Website I’d found is the South Asia one. The
OLPC Foundation’s site I had bookmarked is a short trip through cyberspace from the one you suggested. As OLPC Chairman Negroponte has continued to say since the project’s original MIT lab days, this initiative isn’t about computers, it’s about children learning—lots of sound educational thinking put into the initiative.
