I am looking into Google Apps for Education for our district. Many of our students and staff utilize Google Documents and Google Sites. It seems like Google Apps for Education may be a perfect fit. The stumbling block always seems to be student email. Have any of you use Google Apps for Education and provided students with email accounts? Have you used Google Apps for other uses?
When my kids enter fifth grade they are required to use Google Apps, email and all, blogs, etc. My admins tried to stop it but when they learned it was free they backed off
I installed this on my own server for my third graders to use. I disabled gmail through the admin and focused on the Docs app. Huge success. Students had access to files and apps at home and school. Highly recommend it.
Why restrict the students from using email? It seems insane to me!
Give them tools! Teach them responsible use! Develop creative and critical thinking netizens!
We have been using Google Apps in a Public School (grades 7-12) in Ontario.
It has been very successful. It now includes Postini security suite behind it so we can filter and audit emails. So far (knock wood) we have had not problems with students emailing.
