Correcting in Word may be a useful exercise, but it is a poor habit. If the point of the correcting is to encourage proper grammar, the only way to achieve the goal is to isolate specific errors and work on them one at a time. Word can create the…

Think about what your obectives are for using the blog. Do you want your students to be able to express themselves freely or do you want a more formal discourse. I use blogs as a way for students to express their understandings and opinions on given…

What I usually do is let them know ahead of time what you are looking for. Grade on only one thing at a time. Say one time, you just want to see them write a paragraph and then build up to writing more to obtain confidence. Then start with, okay now…

When I am providing feedback on web pages or blogs I tend to copy and paste the item into Word and then use revision marks and comments to provide feedback. Of course, you have to look at the original as some of the formatting will have changed as…

My head's spinning but I'm loving it [Classroom escapades 03]

It's the end of week 3 of my new Ning-multimedia class.

There's so much happening at times that I can scarcely keep up. So where to start? Well here's some of the highlights and issues I'm thinking about.

The building of community

The students are posting incredibly supportive comments to each other. And it's not empty rhetoric. They're making connections to their own lives - making comparisons and offering support and…

The chaos begins (NOT) - jumping into the deep end with my ESL students

Well we're taking the journey further into the world of Ning in my class.

Today we went through some different features of our class Ning and we

jointly composed a response to a Forum topic and a Blog post (before I

deleted it when I accidentally pressed backspace - Memo to self - teach

students about saving drafts). The shared writing gave them a much

needed foundation. It seemed to help them when they were in the

computer…

The Ning adventure begins - in my class

Posted on January 26, 2008 at 2:01pm 0 Comments

This week I started using a Ning network with my English as a Second Language class.

It's an exciting, challenging time for me working with a group of students

with vastly differing levels of ICT knowledge. Some have studied in the

field while others have had very little experience with computers.

My big lesson this week is Model, model, model and small, small, small. In the

excitement of it all, I think I tried to get too many things going… Continue

Hi Greg. I was wondering if you and your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. If not, perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

Nice idea Greg. I even felt more comfortable with having the avatar 'speak' for me.

hi Greg, I just now saw your question about the little signs in my study tips - I took them from this great website that offers "Internet Bumper Stickers" - I think they are so much fun! There are some categories with lots of potential for teaching! :-)
