I little idea that's been brewing in my head: Integrating coffee/snack breaks into the classroom: When learning gets a bit too much, students are showing signs of fatigue, distraction and you…Continue

"Top 3 good: 1. Students happier in practical sessions 2. Students are more motivated if activity involves their specialty 3. Students seem to be more active and engaged in the morning. Top 3 bad: 1. Not showing up to classes 2. If topic is not…"

"Hi Gina, For certain ages groups that seems like an excellent idea.  BUT, what about the FE/HE area, where clubbing and competing in late night vomiting competitions are SO important!!!?  I suppose it would take time to filter in, and…"

Gina Allen replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"Thanks for your comments all!!! I'm agreeing here that choice is key because not all students behave in the same way - it's impossible to generalise. However i think Ellie and Dave have hit the nail on the head by focusing more theory…"

David Antrobus replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"Hi Gina , Germans are usually right about things and I have to agree there is a limit on how much you can take in at 3.30-5.00 in the afternoon. Concentration levels go down after a certain  amount of time. The secondary school I did some GTP…"

Andrea Thompson replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"I agree with Aimee about giving students the choice between earlier and later starts, as some can function better later during the day than earlier. I do feel a lot of things are aimed at people who prefer to get up earlier and then go to bed…"

Aimee Whatson replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"Why not alternate between early starts (8-1:30) and late starts (1:30-6). This way it is fair for those who function best in the morning and vice versa. With regards to Ellie's comment about extra curricular activities, I think this is a good…"

Melissa Jade Totman replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"Hello Gina, it's a good question! I personally struggle to concentrate in the morning so an early start would be terrible for me as it takes a while for my brain to get into gear. However it does make sense to start earlier and finish earlier…"

Gina Allen replied to Emma Breen's discussion MOBILE PHONES IN CLASS?!
"I have to say I agree with you Jo, technology has come along in such a way that the majority of classrooms have, or have access to, computers or a computer room. They are a) faster and b) easier to control by the teacher or college…"

"Adding extra activities like drama clubs, orchestras, arts and crafts is an added bonus to this set up Ellie, you're right! Another advantage to the earlier start.  On the flip side, regarding changing to work, isn't that just how…"

Ellie Nelson replied to Gina Allen's discussion Have the Germans got a point??
"Hi Gina, I am in total agreement. I feel also that this encourages students to participate in extra curriculur activities, and gain skills in other disciplines that are not included in schools. The only problem with this could be when students leave…"

I don't know about anyone else, but the height of my concentration is in the morning! I am much happier to get up as early as possible, if it means i'm done by lunch time. As soon as a morsel of food hits my belly - THAT'S IT!! Concentration is out the window.Have the German's got it right? An earlier start in the morning, around 8am, and then you're home and done by 1.30pm.This sounds like a great idea to me, but what are your thoughts?Gina :-)See More
