The school year is starting again. Using books is a great way to start discussions and get children to open up about what they are thinking. Books that can be projected on to SmartBoards are even better. Children have a lot of worries and the year 2009 brings more worries than prior years. These worries are carrying over to our youth. Why not combine the power of technology and the power of books to open the children up to a discussion that can free children of some of these worries and start…

During the TechEd 2009 conference, Hall Davidson delivered an interesting presentation on why cell phones should be utilized by students and teachers in the classroom.
According to Davidson, cell phones, and other sorts of mobile technology, will play a significant role in the 21st century classroom because they have become an important part of the lives of today’s students. These “mini” computers are the tools of choice for the so-called digital natives we teach.…

Perhaps the most difficult problems facing educators is the staggering number of students who cheat in school. With the emergence of all sorts of exciting technologies– mobile technologies, social media technologies, etc. — teachers and administrators are finding it virtually impossible to effectively combat cheating.

With the emergence of
social media technology in the classroom, teachers are finding innovative ways to promote student learning. As educators become more sophisticated in terms of utilizing Internet and mobile-based technologies to share information, they are taking advantage of new and exciting opportunities to improve their teaching practice. One particular area of interest to me is the way in which this sort of…

It has been a very busy summer. I'm back to work, but now I have another school added to my schedule as a school psychologist. Because of the economic problems in my region, school psychology positions were not created to keep up with the addition of new schools. The good thing is that my third school is CATA: Central Academy of Technology and the Performing Arts!
I am sure this will be a busy, busy year. Although I wish I was still working part-time and taking graduate classes, I…

What are the key elements required for a transformation of teaching and learning through the use of technology? There are obviously many reasonable ways to look at this. From what position do you view this issue? Are you a teacher, instructional coach, building principal, technology facilitator, director of technology, chief administrative officer of some flavor, superintendent, parent, or student? For you, this issue will likely run through the…

What phrase is abuzz in the world of education? “Technology in the classroom.” Everyone is scrambling to find ways to fund their school districts or buildings with new technology for students and teachers. Some schools reach out to their communities and form alliances with businesses to help supply classrooms with new computers or projectors. Other districts have teachers working late, after school, in the evenings, and on the weekends without compensation writing Perkins grants to receive…

The Lone Star State has jumped into the move toward digital textbooks. A recent bill signed by Gov. Perry allows for school districts to have more flexible spending with their textbook money to incorporate technology. This will allow districts to invest in other ways that may be far more affordable adding more "bang for the buck". California and Texas usually set the trend for how education goes, due to their large populations. Here is the…

"Does online Learning Work?"
It's my observation now, after spending nearly 20 years supporting education technology, that there continue to be major hurdles in getting teachers to adopt technology into their curriculum, no matter how one attempts to integrate it. I do believe that a fair percentage of them have a genuine interest in trying, but the reality is still today, that only a very small percentage end up successfully integrating technology directly.
We deal with…

I grab YouTube clips that effectively communicate multi-step tasks to moderate to severely involved students on the Spectrum. I find that using sequential clips engages students quickly, more effectively and for longer periods of time.
I would like to collaborate with people who think this could prove valuable and would like to explore the potential.

I'm reminded again today how much I love the first day of summer. Not that I get a summer break - as the technology coordinator, the summer is when I do all the maintenance work that I don't get to during the school year. No, what I feel on the first day of summer break is the release of the pressure valve. (Do you hear the hissing?) A brief respite from deadlines, the idea that time is my friend rather than my enemy. What classes would I like to take? What books should I read? Maybe I'll…
