Summarizing and Note Taking

Hello! I am a reading teacher for struggling 6-8th graders. I have been trying to teach my students to summarize but they are really struggling with the concept. They seem to have trouble deciding which details are important and usually include many that are not needed. I have tried selective hi-lighting but many of them end up hi-lighting almost the whole page. Are there any ideas on how I can help my student determine what to include in a summary? I would like this skill to lead into… Continue

The Custodian and the Ditcher

Here's a little true tale I'll call The custodian and the ditcher.

Walking back to class during my planning period I just spied a student being read the riot act... by the school's custodian. It was an African American man speaking to an African American teen telling him about how "he needed to get to class, grab onto this chance for school" while giving him a heads up as to how there are just a whole "mess of people that want to simply turn kids like him into little… Continue

Is it okay to feel GOOD?

Is it okay to feel good? Is it okay to be FIRED UP? Do we spend enough time genuinely recognizing the joy that is the teaching profession?

I mean I just got done with an IMMENSE amount of work. Papers, lesson plans, a trip to Jacksonville, Florida where I did a student assembly for a few hundred at-risk middle school kids about the value of school, education and making good choices (a total HOME-RUN, btw... I mean kids are kids are kids and anyone who doesn't think so,… Continue

The latest news is that Sony has also entered the E-Book reader market. The mobile eBook applications are not far behind, Safari's bookbag application for iPhone is one such example. This indicates that the eBook technology is definitely gaining momentum.

Combining eBooks technology with the collaborative social learning platforms will definitely changing the way we study in classrooms.… Continue

Microsoft’s Live@edu versus Google Apps for Education

What free tools are these giants of the software industry providing to Education?

Both Microsoft and Google offer an evolving set of free online tools specifically for the education community. This week and next we’ll take a brief look at these offerings. I imagine we’ll find a good deal to like about both sets of applications, given the price and ease of a hosted (i.e. Internet based) tool set. Before starting I should add that Microsoft and Google are certainly not the only… Continue

Living in a land where incarceration is a bigger need than schooling.

Turns out the jails in Los Angeles will not have to endure financial cuts. And to the average citizen, I am sure that brings a sigh of relief.

But our schools of course, aren't so lucky.

Why Learning French?

Hello / bonjour,

I am sure that you have encounter the same questions, over and over, about why learning French. I did and for that reason, I strongly beleive that when school start in September, foreign language teachers should begin with a lesson plan that may last for a week on the reasons to learn a foreign language.

For French, often I hear that we do not need to learn it, because Spanish is more important. I like to answer them but prefer when they found the answer… Continue
