Hello from Dubai

Hi all, Just sending a quick post to say hello from the beautiful country of Dubai. I'm here presenting at their international GETEX conference. Dubai is an amazing country - very very technology and internet focused. I'm presenting here on technology leadership and Web 2.0. Interestingly enough, a few of the web 2.0 sites I use most often are blocked at the national level here - flickr and twitter just to name a few. But, the bulk of what I like and use are open here, so that works well. Today… Continue

Well I finally made it! I left the "dark side" and entered into the light of the bleeding edge of teaching traditionally and online. Looking forward using the latest tools in my new classroom at Chalmette High in "Da Parish!"

Chris -- Skype and Flickr are blocked here, but if you have a skype account already, you can use it. Twitter is also blocked. Facebook is not and I can not think of other sites that I would use that are blocked. All google apps are open and we use them at the school. No problems with blogs or wikis of any kind.

Chris, I think it varies from school to school here. American School of Dubai and Dubai American Academy are the bigger schools in the area and are probably keeping up fairly well. At our school we use Blackboard at the high school and middle school for all of our classes. Many teachers are using wikis and blogs (or at least trying them). Some teachers us Google docs/groups, etc. Several teachers have Smartboards. We have laptops available at MS and HS levels and a few computer labs. Our tech dept. tries to stay on top of things, but it always changes. Teachers are trying out new things all the time.

Hi Chris -- I was just reading about the Global Forum on Technology and Innovation in Education and sent out the information to the other members of my department. I work at the American School of Dubai. I won't be able to attend as I will be moving on to China next year, but hopefully one of my teammates will be there. I would love to go. Please feel free to contact me for more information on the schools in Dubai.
