Video Conference Help

We're getting ready to kick off our summer reading program and I'd like to continue my Eagle Reader's Book club through the summer by means of a video conference. I'm not sure what the best way to do this would be. I'm thinking of using Skype but I'm not sure how many people we can have in on the conference.

So, is there a Ning/Classroom 2.0 policy that addresses using the forums as a place to advertise/spam?

If there isn't there should be...

Sorry Brady, thats how I read your response.

Thanks, but I'm trying not spend money that I don't have until I see the response I get.

Hi Brenda

I had a quick look on the Skype site and found that you can have up to 24 participants in a Skype conference - read more here

I hope this helps

Mike and Brenda,

You can have up to 24 on a regular voice conference, not all with video. I believe you are limited to just the 2 on video. There might be an Skype upgrade you could purchase to have more, but that probably wouldn't be feasible (all particiapants would need this). I recently discovered that you can purchase Polycom software without the equipment, then just use a regular web-cam and Net Meeting. This opens options with out the expensive equipment. The software is around $200, I think...

I'm thinking we'll be lucky to have 24 join in and I'd prefer not to make any purchases until I get a better grip on what I want to with it. Then I'll know what I really need to spend $$ on. I'm going to check out the tools in the next post but looking like I'm going to use Skype. Thanks for the info.

You are limited to two people on video with skype, it drops out to be just chat and audio once you invite more in. The video remains with flash meeting for up to 24 people. Elluminate has great interactivity but not video. The audio in Skype still tends to drop out with long distance collaborations but elluminate's audio is and flashmeeting is more robust, in my experience. However, skype is constantly improving its platform and it is becoming less of an issue. Another possibility is ms communicator but I find it slows down the system a lot and is not easy to set up.

That sounds like it will work. I don't think I'll have more than that to join in - but maybe! Positive thinking - and it would be a good problem to work with and justify buying something that will handle the numbers. Thanks for the help.

Brenda,

I am wondering if you had a chance to look at the tools/webpage’s I listed above. What specifically are you looking to accomplish as the facilitator of the group. This service is very inexpensive and you pay month to month with no long term contracts. I just had another middle school principal email me requesting information on the service. I would be happy to talk to you directly if you would prefer. Respectfully...Brady

How many people would have to participate? Do all of them have to be "active" all the time? Here are two (free) tools that I can think of:
1. Oovoo.com - up to six people (Windows or Mac download)
2. http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk (don't know how many people can participate)

Best

I think Flashmeeting can hold up to 24 members. I am like Steve, and still prefer elluminate due to its ease of interactivity, but one benefit that flash meeting has is that you have a live video images of the members in the flash meeting.

I read Brady's message as a little too commercial as well. There is a fine line we tread here at CR 2.0, because we don't want to exclude vendors who have something valuable to offer (most especially, their experience). Glad to have you here, Brady, but I think Stu would not be alone in feeling like that was a commercial push. See some guidelines at http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topic/show?id=649749%3ATopic%3A10556.

Brenda: I've found Elluminate to be very open to helping out educators, and you can apply for a "community" program with them. Of course, they are a commercial company as well, but seem to be willing to work with educational groups as long as the content is open. You are also welcome to use the Classroom 2.0 Elluminate office, too, and it holds up to 100 people. You can see what can be done by looking at www.classroom20wiki.com/live+conversations.

You might also look at DimDim, which is Open Source, and which appears to be doing good things. WizIQ is also used by a lot of educators.

Good luck! I believe you're working on something really worthwhile, and it's way I've been touting the web-meeting platform.
