Ah, that's just too telling, isn't it? I'm sure it's blocked because it's a google doc. I hope you have the chance to do this at home - rather inconvenient, huh?

I did the survey but wasn't sure if you wantd me to do it several times or list them all in the same little box so I opted for one at a time.

Thanks so much Lisa! It doesn't matter which one you choose, some people have put them all together, others one at a time. Whichever is easiest, that's the key :-)

Thanks for taking the time to do it at home - guess it's proving that Google Docs aren't accessible at all schools! What a shame - this is one of the points I'm trying to make!

Your welcome. I understand the need for filters in schools. Especially in our district we can't establish groups for high school versus elementary students. What is unblocked for one is unblocked for all. I do think though with web 2.0 coming out we need to reevaluate the filters we are using. In my district all message boards and forums are blocked, wiki and blogs are blocked, google docs are blocked; this list just goes on and on. Valuable educational tools are being denied to both education professionals and students. It has gone beyond blocking sites to protect the students. I am just glad you have created this survey. Would it be too much to ask for you to post the data from your survey?

I will surely post the data - I'll put it up here, on my blog, and in a public google spreadsheet. I want to leave this open long enough for more people to respond, I'm hoping more people will take this in the next few days. Thanks :-)

The question is a good one... and I will commit myself to trying to give a 'technology' view for each entry (though in some cases that might mean I agree with the content being blocked)... I will also try to offer up some ideas on alternate methods for accessing the content.

I will also point out that there are technologies that allow for blocking based on user accounts and I would prefer to see that done instead of blanket blocking. Often there are resources that in 'mature' hands are valuable, but the same resource is not valuable in 'immature' hands.

That is if you are willing to let me do that... great topic though.

As we discussed on twitter, I'm MORE than happy to have your input! Put in whatever you would like - I'm really looking forward to hearing from the technology-dept standpoint! As you point-out, there are technologies allowing different access levels and I'm in agreement that this is a much better way to manage things than blanket blocking. It shouldn't be an all or nothing issue, in my opinion. So, take the survey, please!
