"Here's my blog post on ning alternatives. The tools I discuss are not all-inclusive tools as ning was, but instead a hodgepodge of tools that can be linked together, like schoolrack, etc."

Ning Alternatives - make suggestions here

I'm creating this discussion as a way to keep everyone's Ning alternative suggestions in one place.  I've found bits of information throughout this forum but it would be nice to keep everything together.  Below is a small list that I've gathered from my quick searches on this forum.  It would be great if people who have moved on to these alternatives or others can please come back to this thread and share with us your experience.  Please share the pros and cons. I'm looking for stability and it…See More

"This looks very promising. I'm intrigued and would be interested in hearing more of your thoughts on Grouply as it compares to Ning. Also, do you know if there is a limit to how many sites we can create?"

"Ning mini is free for teachers but the features are limited, not even worth using in my opinion. I too am looking for other alternatives."

"I'm disappointed, even with the free Ning mini for educators. Without groups and some of the other features, the Ning mini is useless. It's basically just a blog/wiki which I can create for free any place else. I am also concerned that…"

"One thing to look into would be www.edu20.org. It does much more than what you're asking, but it does in fact do that. And it should be free. You can import students information from an excel spreadsheet to create their accounts, but…"

Need a way to distribute course schedules online

I'm looking for an online database system or something that will allow students to log in and view their course schedule without seeing other students' info.  We're talking about 1200 students.  Currently, we print each student's schedule out on paper and they come in to pick it up.  We have student info and course schedules in excel.  I'd like to be able to import the data from excel to some database online that students can access their own info.  Can anyone offer some advice?  Thanks!See More

"Hi Joe, Thanks for sharing your site. Such amazing work on there! Very inspiring. I also would like to use videos as prompts to inspire my students to write. I think we share the same idea. I want to make a part of my ning site public so that I can…"

"Last spring I created a ning for my film class. Each week I post a digital journal assignment and asked my students to comment on it. I also used the site to showcase student work. The ning offers a lot of possibility. You can view my site by going…"

Teaching creative writing - need help

I'm new to ning and want to start using it in my college creative writing classes. I've been searching on here but haven't found much info about teaching creative writing. Here's what I want to do and I'm looking for ideas/suggestions on how to best set up my ning site. I teach three classes and want them to have their "group" in ning. I only want students from the same class to be able to view each other's work and critique it. I want discussions and comments to all stay inside their own…See More

Hi sonya,

With your interest in Education Technology for your creative writing classes, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.
