IMHO, the best formative assessments are open and require analysis of existing knowledge and information and the generation of something new - some product. In my work with training teachers, I look to see if what they learned changed their practice…

About Me
Hi,

I am a sixth-year teacher working, full-time, in the Chilliwack School District, in south-central British Columbia, Canada. During the 2011/2012 school year, I’ll working at Central Elementary Community School as a grade 5/6 teacher.

I’m interested in connecting with educators, community leaders and professionals in my province, in Canada, and around the world to help make my classroom an exciting and productive environment. Working in a collaborative environment is important to me whether I’m collaborating virtually with my Twitter PLN as @Mr_Lister, or with a small group of teachers in Chilliwack, B.C. (#cwkpln)

I’m a relationship builder before I would classify myself as a teacher. My job is to know and understand my learners and their environments before I’m able to fully challenge them, academically, in the classroom.

My interests in education are varied and numerous but if I have to narrow it down to a couple of specific areas I’d say I’m interested in using technology to increase student engagement and offer differentiated instruction. I enjoy turning traditional ‘offline’ classroom activities, ‘online’ and linking them directly to B.C. performance outcomes and standards. Also, I’m passionate about providing practical everyday examples of mathematics by answering questions from students starting with, “When will I ever use this?” It’s also my intent to help all my learners improve their ability to expressing themselves orally and in written form. It seems simple but writing and speaking opportunities in my classroom are explicit practices created all day, every day.
It’s also important for me to reach out to the local community and invite them to be active members of the classroom. If you’d like to be involved please contact me.

My goal for the 2011/2012 school year is to work hard on three-levels of engagement to increase achievement in my classroom and school: Teacher engagement (a support and a resource for fellow educators), parent engagement, and student engagement.

Thanks for taking the time to understand some of my pedagogy.

Hi Chris -- Welcome to Canadians Mashup. I hope you were not under water out there with all the flooding after the big snow!

I don't see the group banner here on your page, so I think there's one last step to do :

(1) Click on Sue Hellman above this message to navigate to my page. Part way down on the left is a Canadian map under My Groups. If you click on that and then look beneath the main banner (right of center) on the group page, you should see + Join this Group. Click and that should do it.

Hi Christopher -- If I didn't send you an invitation yesterday, I'd like to invite you to join a Classroom 2.0 group called Canadians Mashup. I'm trying to build a network of Canadian educators and bloggers who are interested in sharing and connecting.

3 steps:

(1) Navigate to the Sue Hellman page. Part way down on the left is a Canadian map under My Groups. If you click on that and then look beneath the main banner (right of center) on the group page, you should see + Join this Group. Click and you’ll be in.

(2) Invite me to be a colleague please.

(3) If you add yourself to the map, please include a name or a photo of some sort. 'Anonymous' cannot be distinguished from ‘Unknown Location’ when I try to clean up the false starts. THANKS!!!!

If you've already received this, please disregard. -SueH

I'm just starting out by trying to find where everyone lives and what they teach. If you're interested, please add me as a colleague as well.

I have some ideas of how to deal with the dilemma you wrote of in your blog. I llive in South Surrey. If you want to write back and forth, please contact me at my email.

Meanwhile do you feel this way too?
