Our Past or Their Future

“Are we preparing students for our past or their future?” Our assistant principal emailed this quote to me while she was listening to a presentation at a conference. It took me right back to my ancient past of about 20 years ago. I had just started a software training business. The bread and butter of software training in those days was WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3. I was a successful trainer because I provided every detail of every step of every operation my clients needed to use these programs…See More

"Your quote says it all. It sounds like something Socrates might have said, or maybe a Jesuit. If you have not tried Betty Crocker mac and cheese, you are missing one of the great pleasures of life."

Plagiarism and Plato

If you ever wish to engage a high school faculty in a lively discussion, just mention the word plagiarism. Students copy and paste volumes from the Internet. They unashamedly copy each other’s homework in the hallways. They will look teachers right in the eye and swear that every word of their perfect essay came straight from their own minds. Research leaves no doubt that plagiarism is rampant in our…

Macaroni and Cheese: The Key to Understanding Education

It seems that however well 21st Century education is explained the vast majority just do not understand what it’s about. It doesn’t matter that the roots of 21st Century education go all the way back to the ancient Greeks. It doesn’t matter that 21st Century education is not some new fad here in the United States. John Dewey was writing about this stuff…

Thanks for the praise but I think of myself as a small grain of sand in a beach. The kids have some many influences on their education, and I am small in the structure. I believe in good structures above good individuals. Better be an average teacher in a good structure than a good teacher in an average structure. Personal opinion of course. So I try to get along the structure I am in and I feel sad when things do not work well in the structure for everybody suffers. Regards.

Maths, Physics need and may construct exact exams. But I am speaking on Literature Exams. We teach Jose Saramago, the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner's work "Memorial do Convento" . Asked my students: May we write with Saramago's (confusing!) style? My answer "No, they'll kill you and you fail the test!". "Why?" - asked they. "Because I tell you so!" - I replied. Period. So much for Literature Exams.

I make them memorize what the Literature critics about Saramago even though they do not agree with what they are saying and they always get great grades, and I am considered a great teacher, whom the parents send the kids to tuition to prepare for exams.

Crazy world...

Hi Mitch!

Hope you had a nice winter break. I was wondering if you or your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. If not, perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. We'd really like to get students involved from California!

You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
