I agree. I don't want a school run like a business because we cannot control our product (what students we get), but it would be nice to have an expense account. When I first starting teaching the administration gave me a box of chalk. When I ran out I went to the office to get more. I was given not a box, but 2 pieces and told to make them last. What a joke.

Matt, thanks for letting me know about your site EditMe. In one of the threads you asked why teachers are willing to settle for the free wikis with all the extra unwanted, undesirable cruft when for only $60 we could have a site that is better regulated with more options and secure. I can only speak for myself. Our tech budget is set in advance. For something like your website I would have to know at least half a school year a head of time what I wanted and what it would cost. I didn't foresee using an "outside wiki." We have Moodle installed on our servers and it has a wiki module. Until Sunday morning, I was unaware that this module is flaky. I already spend way too much money on my classroom and my students. Five dollars a month is not a lot of money but I don't want to pay that out of my pocket until I know that I will continue to use the site. Right now, this is a short term project. A free site makes sense to me at the moment. If I continue to use wikis and Moodle doesn't fix its wiki module, I will consider asking the tech guys for a subscription.

Anyway, that's my situation.

With your work in Web 2.0, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
