"Biodiesel-powered 2000 VW Jetta routinely gets 45-50 mpg, has a 700 mile range and has been a class winner in autocross and hillclimb competitions. Solar- and wind-powered Ranger pickup gets the equivalent of 92mpg, has a 100 mile range and runs on…"

Why should we mainstream environmental education?

Why should we mainstream environmental education?Environmental issues' importance will continue to grow during this century. Whether one looks at seemingly mundane local issues of increasingly complicated waste disposal, the impact of new government environmental regulation on established businesses, or worldwide challenges like water shortages, perpetual hostilities near vital resources, and the undeniable disappearance of glaciers and polar ice, nearly everyone has a strong opinion and feels…See More

Mainstreaming environmental education in K12 science

Over the past ten or so years, I've been working at bringing a more environmental approach to my high school science classes, while still engaging students in science, technology, engineering and math with appropriate rigor.I'd like to share some of the things that are working for me, and I'm curious about the experiences teachers of younger students have with teaching science to their age groups. I'm curious - can we imagine a way to create an educational experience for students that has a…See More

About Me
I teach Physics and Environmental Chemistry at St. Mark's, a private coed boarding school in eastern Massachusetts. I'm particularly keen on project-based teaching in science! Some past projects included a solar-powered pickup truck, a 50-gallon biodiesel processor and various electronic, robotic and rocket projects.
We have moved away from using textbooks in Physics and in Environmental Chem; most of the materials students use is authored by their teachers accessed on their computers. My AP Physics class "publishes" their rocket research findings to their classmates on a wiki.
