Jim D replied to Dave Peterson's discussion FETC vs NECC vs TCEA vs ????
"I went to NECC (I think it is ISTE now) and it had around 400 or more vendors there. They had more breakout sessions than I could muster time for. It is well worth it if you can make it. I heard that FETC and TCEA are about the same."

"Sue...do you use the classroom management software? I think it doesn't have quite all of the features that SmartSync has, but it comes free and it works well for us. How about the cloning software? Our tech's like the fact that it allows…"

Jim D replied to Randy Williams's discussion Fiddlehead hardware agnostic cloning
"That's what I'm talking about...If you hear that they will be showing off the vanilla cloning, let us know. I won't be there but if any of you are going to be there, stop in and check out the cloning capabilities. I am going to send…"

Jim D replied to Renee Nicole Vinci's discussion New Technology
"I heard that the folks from Fiddlehead also have a single head version that will work on regular PC's. That is, it is designed to be loaded on a PC without the multiuser splitting technology. That allows all of the extra free open source…"

Jim D replied to David Roth's discussion Laptop Carts and the NComputing Solution
"Janine, we are waiting for the no CPU, no motherboard, no hard drive, dummy laptop coming out from Fiddlehead. It has nothing in it except a small LCD screen, keyboard, and trackball, and a low power transceiver. It runs off of the 32 or 48 user…"

Jim D replied to David Roth's discussion Laptop Carts and the NComputing Solution
"Agreed. I am an absolute FOSS advocate. Unfortunately we are stuck with running MS applications. We are using Fiddlehead to not only save money and time legally, but we are really using it to move from M$ to FOSS...Office to OpenOffice...etc."

MultiSeat computing - keeping your licensing legal

Posted on July 10, 2009 at 7:39am 0 Comments

I have been watching nComputing and Fiddlehead as they work to earn some of the K-12 market. As I have tested both and heard from other schools that have done the same, I would say that nComputing has a much larger market share, but it is because of marketing budget, not because it is a better product. I stood outside both booths at NECC and it was apparent that Fiddlehead customers are much happier than nComputing customers. When I overheard a Microsoft rep say that Fiddlehead is totally legal… Continue

Netbooks versus desktops versus nComputing vs Fiddlehead

What are some thoughts regarding netbooks versus desktop PC's? I have been hearing that everyone is going to netbooks (from the PC makers) but none of my colleagues seem to be moving that way. I'd say that PC's are here to stay for a while. According to Wikipedia "Netbooks are small portable computing device, similar to a notebook, and are great for surfing the Web and checking e-mail. " With all of the well documented problems associated with notebooks I don't see how a cheaper, less capable… Continue

Hi Jim,

With your interest in Education Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.
