Meaningful Math

I teach 5th grade and have been frustrated with math curriculum for years. Many middle school teachers in our district have been able to use a program called CPM (College Preparatory Math) and have seen growth in student understanding of math concepts. Students work through situations where they discover and work with concepts.I was wondering if anyone knows of a program with similar structure for upper elementary students.See More

Over the years, Project Based Learning has taken over more and more of my classroom day. I started with projects in the social studies and science portions of my curriculum. "Terry, I had a lot of fears too before I had a classroom of my own. I got great tips from my Master teachers during student teaching. Once I was fortunate enough to get a classroom of my own, I soon found that I could handle it. There's…"

"I have found that if a respectful learning community is clearly established from day 1, the need to "manage" student behavior diminishes. I teach 5th grade and greet each student individually at the door as they enter class. They look me…"

Gillian Ryan replied to Kaila Soltez's discussion Homework: yes or no?
"Angela, that is just what I found with my students. They work to get their work done in class. . They ask, "Can I work on this at home?" if they don't finish in class. When we are begining a new science or social studies project, my…"
