Gaming for gaming sake

I have only been an active participant in classroom 2.0 for a short time, and after looking at a lot of the posts, wanted to ask a question. How many of you are teaching gaming in your high schools just for gaming sake. That is, to teach them now to program games? It seems like there is a lot of discussion about using games and gaming to teach something else. That makes sense. But how about teaching it because it is a valuable skill. One that will be important in many jobs that they will have.…See More

About Me
I am married, a father of two high school boys and the president of FreshBrain, a not for profit focused on providing teens with a place to explore, connect, create and share with technology.

Check out all of the cool things happening on freshbrain.org

We are trying to make a difference in the education of our teens in the area of technology.

We just completed our Free Virtual Summer Technology Camp. We had over 40,000 visitors and more than 2,300 participants. There is clearly a need for this kind of opportunity for our teens!

We have since added the summer camp learning paths to the various technology areas. Take a look and see if there is something interesting! Start at the Explore page where you will see Graphic Design, Video / Movies, Gaming, Web and so on.

Teachers, we will be enhancing our Teachers page shortly. Keep an eye on it.

And keep checking back for great Scholarship opportunities.

Hi Dale
Happy to meet like-minded people. I am also trying to find my way to better education and its reach. I concentrate in gaming as a communications channel. You are invited to read my blog at http://www.or-tal.com/ to get a little glimpse into my life...

Hi Dale,

I see that the Boys & Girls Clubs are a partner of Fresh Brain. Seems to me that one way to reach more kids, especially at risk kids, might be to reach out to non-school, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs, or places in neighborhoods, where kids, volunteers and technology can connect.

I lead the Tutor/Mentor Connection in Chicago and focus on helping such places be in all poverty areas, with the resources each program needs to be a world-class organization. I encourage you to browse some of my blog articles to see what this would take and how you and your network could adopt some of these roles, as part of your own business expansion.

Hi Dale,

With your work in Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording you might find of interest.

Thanks, Dale. Your site is very cool. It is like Brainyflix times 100! I would love to get some tips from you about how you went about getting partners. We are hustling to keep Brainyflix going.

Hey Dale,

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country!

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal. More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules.

Do you mind telling students and your colleagues again?

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Dale!

Hope you're enjoying the winter break. I was wondering if you, your educator contacts or students would be interested in participating in a nationwide Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. We'd really like to get more students involved from California!

You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
