There are probably several ways to download YouTube and other videos and save them to a DVD or flash drive. Basically, you'll just download them to your computer using converter software and then copy them to your flash drive or burn them using the DVD burning software on your computer.A free web-based converter can be found at www.zamzar.com (there are also more versions of the same software
It's great to find a website that provides a service of use and works well-and for free! Web Resizer is one of those! Do you want to make sure that people who view your website aren't waiting long periods for your photos to load? This is especially true for teachers who post images of students or student projects or who have websites where students upload a lot of photos. Webresizer reduces
A second free application from the Rich Internet Applications suite of programs from the Center for Language Education And Research of Michigan State University is called Viewpoint. Viewpoint allows you to create simple videos (using your own webcam and microphone) completely from within your web browser. The completed video is saved in your CLEAR account and accessible via a URL or is
The great new website that I learned about at TESOL 2009 in Denver that I've already started to use (I created a practice speaking exercise for my students to use starting Monday.) is the "Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning" website created and developed by the Center for Language Education And Research at Michigan State University. Dennie Hoopingarner presented the free tools that

Actually, it's not clear that email IS the tool that today's students will be using! I've seen discussions in various forums pointing out that email use is in younger generations is being bypassed by other modes of communication such as texting or...
It also depends on what type of activity you want your students to participate in, because some of the host websites have features that are intended for use by students who don't have individual email addresses. For example, if you're thinking abo...
Thanks for sharing your experience. I don't have a clicker system either. Just the tablet. I hope to be able to move around the classroom and control the computer from anywhere as well.
Last may I got to "test drive" one that was offered to my school...but not the clicker system mentioned in the orientation by a company rep. The latter seemed more useful to me.
In my discipline, English, I am looking for means of manipulating te...
It appears that I've been "gifted" a new Interwrite Mobi tablet by a colleague, but it looks like it will come without the clicker system that I've seen mentioned in other locations. Does anyone have any experience with using a Mobi tablet without...
How about an update on how you spent the money?!?
The tip about putting some money aside for upkeep was a good one. I also hope you were able to suspend your LCD projector from the ceiling instead of having to keep it on a table. My wish list inc...
Had to go to google to search for the meaning of the tech term open-slather! When you say students have access to"just about everything" but not facebook in particular, I wonder why facebook is considered worthy of blocking when "just about everyt...
Hello Supra,
Your comment "we built educational apps for the device" caught my eye. What is involved in creating applications for these types of devices? What level of programming ability is required? Are teachers going to be dependent on programm...
ESL Teacher Adviser, Division of Adult and Career Education, Los Angeles Unified School District and ESL Intermediate Low Teacher, Pacoima Skills Center
About Me
I have dual roles in the Division of Adult and Career Education: I'm an in-classroom teacher of ESL for adult immigrant students at Pacoima Skills Center, and I'm a teacher adviser at the division level in ESL programs. My main area of focus as a teacher adviser is training our division's ESL instructors in the use of and integration of technology in their teaching. In that role, I also collaborate with other teacher advisers in integrating technology into our ESL course outlines and other publications. Being a classroom teacher gives me the opportunity to experiment with the technologies that I learn about with my own students. For me, it's a perfect combination!

Hi Barry,
I know that videos brought into the session are not made part of the recording. This was a decision a year ago by Wiziq but now they're changing this.

Hi Barry,
Wiziq is very easy to use. There are examples of students participating in public sessions, but I don't think full on presenting. In the private sessions I think there are examples of students presenting but they are, of course, private.
I think you should give it a shot. :)
The basic service is free.

Hi Barry,
With your work in Technology Integration for your ESL students at LA Unified SD, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording you might find of interest.
It seems like the Random link in the teacher.pageflakes subdomain only links to other teacher.pageflake pages. That is a lot better than the regular pageflakes and something to consider.
Have you seen http://teacher.pageflakes.com/? I think Pageflakes has fallen short of the goal. They have a custom set of flakes that are edu-centric when you open the control panel, but the browse flakes/pagecasts buttons are still available. I can't use that with students.
And you are right - the random pagecast link is still there. In other words, they haven't really done anything yet. Have you heard anything else?
Sorry for the delay in communication - it's been a crazy 1st half of the year! I love Pageflakes as a tool, but I think they have a small team over there. My conversations with them are always positive, but I find that it takes a very long time to execute on those conversations. Most of the things I've asked for haven't been delivered yet: removing the random link, removing the Browse all Flakes button, and customizing the list of flakes available to students. It's been disappointing because we had to put our plans of students using the service on hold. I'm still waiting patiently because I think Ole and his group will get it together. In the meantime, I am using it as a resource portal for teachers, parents, and students. Such a shame - it's so much more powerful than that.
