I am interested in using Ning with students. What have people done or ideas they have had?

All students who are members have the ability to make their own page. You can see all students and link to their page, but your page is declared the "Main" page. You can create another site and have them link there or create links within your site. You can add or embed videos, I have placed MP3 podcast projects, digital storytelling projects, placed RSS feed, and more. I am sure there is a size limit, but I have never run into an issue with it. --- I agree there is not a lot of educational advantage to them making their own page (yes, you could teach them a bit of html, embedding, etc.), but it is a good opportunity to teach them how to responsibly use an online social environment (i.e. don't use real name, don't disclose personal info, etc. --- this is a VERY hard thing to teach and you would be amazed without guidance how much kids will post about their personal lives). Anyway, there are so many ways you could use this. If I could have ALL my students on, I would use it more. I use it for anchor/reward time and to post and share student work with the class.
How can I see your site? Can you suggest a good way to introduce to class. And can you tell me where to navigate on site to invite students and have some administrator controls?

Send me an email and I will "invite" you. Though I am not using it too actively now, you can at least see how it can be used. It is also a nice reward for students who have completed their work. They love spending time here (they also do it from home). --- Note, students within network can message each other. Just be aware of this.

I recommend introducing this with a good article about Social Networking. You could use a What Do you Know, What do you want to know, What do you know now (3-column) format in conjunction with the article and a class discussion. Then explain the way you intend to use it. I tell my kids how we will use it as a class, how they can use it socially, and sell it as our secure "MySpace." They just know I monitor it and they are expected to be responsible.

I will post on my own discussion, that I've had on this topic but not sure if it shows up on top. Today I excitedly started inviting my students by assigned periods/groups to joing my ning network. I invited them by making up six individual periods into their own groups and then inviting friends for each. However, when I go to my main page and press members, they all show up on the main page.

I only want students to access to their indivdual groups/periods. I thought I could do this as an administrator? Can anyone please tell me what I have done wrong???



I was able to invite them to the group, but they are still showing up on the main page which I don't want to happen, because then they will start chatting with their friends from other classes.



Please help help help

So what did you do to get your students blogging on NING? Do they do it on their own? Or do you give them topics to discuss? I can't imagine my special needs 7-9's blogging about something unless I assign them to do it.

Teachers can set up free, teacher-monitored email accounts on ePals. (No embedded ads to distract student attention, either.)

Look on the right side of the screen and click on District or School Administrators Bulk Registration to register more than one class quickly and easily. You can monitor student work and also control how widely they can email...only to other students in your class, or to predefined groups, or to anyone on the internet. Of course you would want to get parent permission before signing up students for any email system. (That might be covered in your AUP.)
When you set up your page, you click on manage, where you can decide who controls comments and responses (either you the administrator, or there are other choices). Students log in to your site and respond and reply on the ning site directly. You do have to invite each one individually by email, then they respond, and you approve them. They will have a page on ning "my page" which they control, you do not, and they get this automatically for signing on. You can link other pages to your ning site, ie I have a link to their open-source online grade book (engrade) so they can check their grades, and to another class blog that is public that has other information. (for that I use googles blogger- easy to use- I would check that out for your blogging needs :D) Hope this helps- Im learning all the time, and always welcome suggestions!
