Posted on November 25, 2008 at 8:26pm 0 Comments

Today we are exploring Classroom 2.0 as a tool to learn about all things ICT and Web 2.0. We have 11 participants in the room and they are all adding a blog post.

Julia Gillard MP and me!

This is a photo taken on April 16th at the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College. DMSC put on a great 2 day conference to highlight their work with the Leading Schools Fund with the focus on technology in the classroom. Dimboola teachers were passionate about the use of their Interactive Whiteboards and… Continue

Moving forward with the Ultranet...

Posted on March 8, 2008 at 3:56pm 0 Comments

In the last two months I have been working in my new role of 'Ultranet Coach'. What this really means is working with schools and leaders in my region to support them in the use of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) as a meas for being ready for the Ultranet. Each school is unique and has its own strengths and challenges.

In Victoria we are working towards creating learning environments that best… Continue

Playing with Voki

Posted on January 14, 2008 at 12:30pm 2 Comments

Today I decided to create my own avatar with Voki.com. I began in the morning having a play with the tools - the different character heads, eyes, mouth and even make up! I chose my outfit and then changed my mind at least 10 times! This behaviour has no resemblance to me in real life!!! I chose a background - a photo of one of my classrooms. In this classroom the kids designed and painted the tables themselves. The room was designed for group and independent workers, with a couch and recliner,… Continue

Not bad for PD during my holidays!

Posted on January 11, 2008 at 6:05pm 0 Comments

I've been on summer vacation now for 3 weeks and have had some wonderful learning happening in this time. Ever since I attended a workshop on blogs and wikis mid last year, I have been fascinated by the power of Web 2.0. Attending NavCon 2k7 in September fuelled my curiosity even more when I listened to a presentation on all things Web 2.0.

Now I have to say that the networks on Classroom 2.0 and Twitter have been major players in introducing me to a world of Web 2.0 apps. Where do I… Continue

Peer Coaching Training

Posted on January 2, 2008 at 7:04am 0 Comments

Back in December I ran a Peer Coaching workshop for a group of 7 Victorian teachers. I was able to organisie my workshop with the help of Les from the Puget Sound Centre who gave me some tips for running a one day workshop. You see, when I was trained it was a 10 day intesive training program so a one day session needed serious modification.

The session ran well and I focussed on where PD was heading with ICT (Information and Communication Technology). We then worked on coaching skills… Continue

2007 VITTA conference

Posted on November 17, 2007 at 3:16am 1 Comment

I'm off to the VITTA conference again this year and looking forward to hearing Stephen Heppell talk about 21st Century Learning with ICT. I'm interested to hear his views on how education is changing. I sometimes wonder if it is actually changing or if it is just dressed up prettier in our schools!

I'm running my Peer Coaching session this year with more of an emphasis on my research in US.

I've attached the link to the conference below.… Continue

Home from NavCon2k7

Posted on October 6, 2007 at 1:42am 2 Comments

I've just come home from the NavCon2k7 conference in Gosford, NSW, and had to start playing on my laptop straight away. I have explored so many Web 2.0 tools that should not only inspire my students but also the teachers in my school.

I'm really keen to try out rafi.ki with my Grade 4 class. We are learning about our environment, with a particular reference to droughts and global warming. It would be great for the kids to exchange ideas, stories and pictures about their environment… Continue

Hi Helen,
You were truely inspirational and i did get a lot out of your presentation so was more than happy to leave a good comment. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction you have filled the void with your knowledge and i am truely grateful for your journey and for sharing it. I am now on my own journey similar to yours but at least i have been lucky enough to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks again. Katy

Hi Helen,

My name is Alyshia Olsen; I am a 20 year old college student from Olin College of Engineering. I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham, MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. Since you are in the 'e-learning and online teaching' group, I thought you might be interested! Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:

Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.

Our project, titled Alight Learning, is currently trying to win a competition for startup funding on ideablob.com. You can find us at http://ideablob.com/3975 . We would love your support in the form of a vote within the next couple days, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets at many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving, but at least it's a start.

Feel free to email me back, check out alightlearning.com, anything you like!

Thanks,

Alyshia Olsen

I am from Ghana and I'm just here to learn, contribute as well as link up with like-minded people who will be willing to share their experiences as well as help in spreading the concept of distance learning and adult education to Africa, which lags behind as far as education is concerned. My company has developed a television program called 'ADULTS IN EDUCATION' which is used in teaching, especially adults, how to read and write as well as general tips on how to take care of oneself. We also treat social issues as well. Television is still the widest means of disseminating information here in Ghana
