Just as there is a problematic digital divide among regions of the U.S., where some students have 24/7 access to information while others have no access, there is a problematic division between teacher's understanding of and use of technology for learning. I am talking, here, about situations where technology would actually be significantly more beneficial than traditional means of learning.
It seems we may be approaching a point where technology standards ought to be developed for…

Participatory Media Rights in Education Now!
I get sick to my stomach every time I hear of a school banning Twitter. I feel even worse for teachers and students who have never had the opportunity to use Twitter in the classroom.
I've spent the past week live blogging what I think are very successful uses of Twitter in class. I dare any administrator to visit my Twitter-enhanced Latin classes and then tell me social media has no place in a school building.
I wish…

I wish to share my recent presentation about openness in social networking, business communications and cloud computing. The presentation and a more detailed discussion paper are an appeal for more openness, which I justify by exploration of a variety of online services, and by drawing attention of the adverse consequences of a lack of openness. The
Powerpoint presentation is on Slideshare.net for anyone who is…

I have been using Twitter for over a year. Since New Years 2009, Twitter has taken off to new heights. Everybody wants you to follow him or her on twitter, from United States Senators to Shaq, twitter has become a ubiquitous forum for those who want to know everything.…

I'm currently a mother, chef, textile artist, working as a relief teacher, secondary education in Tasmania. Food and Textiles. I'm loving blogging and am interested in the shift that youth and technology, economic and climate change are all ushering in. It is significant that as the new tools/resources are introduced the old pedagogy are dying. I appreciate Steve Hardegon Will Richardson,George Siemens and Stephen Downes as guides as I navigate the fault lines.

Every year, students receive a daily planner before the start of school. Depending on the grade level, some teachers will spend a day showing students how to effectively plan their week. For most, this is a practical tool that has worked for many years. However, it is also a tool that many students lose. What if it was…

If there is one thing students and teachers despise it's clutter. One way teachers create clutter is asking students to print out a current event. Students print out weekly current events, read and summarize it, have it graded and then throw it out. I found more current events lying on my floor or in my trash than any other classroom document. Cringing already teachers? Fear…

I'm messing around with NPR's
custom-podcast tool.
Just created a custom-cast that ostensibly will fill up with NPR stories about education and digital culture.
First story that popped up on my iTunes library was about colleges dropping textbooks in favor of e-books.
Here's the link to my mix:…

A portion of this post is a response to a class discussion, addressing the idea of using social networking tools in a standard classroom setting. My classmate didn't think it was a good idea to incorporate these technologies in the standard learning process. Technology such as Twitter and other social networking technologies used in the classroom can "possibly" disrupt the standard learning process. An…

Since it is a holiday weekend for most, I thought I would take a break from eating chocolate and jelly beans...mmmmmm jelly beans and make two videos on how I utilized my wikispace in the classroom.
Here are two videos that I made through the use of
JING and screencast.com. These are two great free resources - that allow upgrades to pro accounts - for any classroom.
In my classroom, I found my wikispaces to be a great source of…

Last Tuesday, we learned about
Web 2.0 Technology. It has greatly helped all of us to be able to enjoy the Internet and also be able to connect with other users- even if you have never met them before! In class, Mr. Eveland showed us an old game,
Oregon Trail, and then played it on the Internet. Using an educational yet fun fames in which students can learn and have fun at the same…

There's been a lot of talk recently about 21st Century Skills. But most of this talk has been between folks who stand to make a lot of money off the use of tech on the one side and folks who are suspicious of -- if not fundamentally opposed to -- tech on the other. Like most discussions in education, the voice missing in the debate is that of the students themselves.
So, I asked students in one of my paperless high school Latin classes to tell me how things were going for them. I…

Interested in any of the following mini conferences near Milwaukee on April 20 and 21st?
(Number 2 seems interesting to me.)
The Wisconsin Charter Schools Association is hosting their annual conference in Waukesha at the Country Springs Hotel (about 20 minutes west of Milwaukee). I have to say, they have put together a pretty interesting conference, and they promise that all the sessions will be interactive.
Go to www.wicharterschools.org for registration…
