[Posted last month about video hosting sites focused on educational applications - a nice intro to a few of the sites out there that focus on providing this service for the academic community. - KW]

Like many of the educators I know, you have probably heard of TeacherTube, but like me, you may be wondering how TeacherTube differs from YouTube, and how it compares to alternative… Continue

First I have to confess I did vote for Obama, so my dissappointment in the statements of the New Education Secretary is leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.
"Secretary Duncan also noted that the budget overview includes a $500 million grant program for a new federal-state-local partnership to improve retention and graduation rates, particularly for low-income college students. Funds would support research into what works to help increase college completion." Wow, didn't that… Continue
Every year, students receive a daily planner before the start of school. Depending on the grade level, some teachers will spend a day showing students how to effectively plan their week. For most, this is a practical tool that has worked for many years. However, it is also a tool that many students lose. What if it was…
When many people consider returning to school, they often reflect on what their high school experience was like. They have unpleasant memories of hard wooden desks and strict teachers. Today's adult education system is much more improved. Going back to school is now becoming a very popular choice for adults. There are many reasons why older people are continuing their education. Some of these reasons include:
• Increase their chances of getting a promotion or pay raise
•… Continue

A few friends and I have been working at a startup building a tool for very large conversations online. We've only recently introduced it to the world of education, and we are very excited at the possibilities. Students as young as eighth grade have found it easy enough to use. The importance of this type of technology is that it challenges students how to really think about what they want to say; that sounds simple, but the results are surprising.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, signed into law on February 17, aims to lend a helping hand to not only employment, health care and taxes, but significantly for the struggling state school systems: It more than doubles the education funding of the previous presidential administration.
Palm Breeze Café was originally founded as an informal resource sharing tool for teachers in Florida. Since 2005, they’ve expanded their reach to include podcasts and a TV broadcast. Their catchphrase, “convenient and flexible education,” underscores their dedication to finding the most user-friendly and innovative tools on the web.
Last week, after coming across our software on the web, the teachers of Palm… Continue

My last post was a highlight of a train wreck of a children's book. The conversation in the comments section was all about media literacy. If you know me, you know that I don't like to dwell long on things negative. And thus- this post was published.
Regardless of your take on The Septapus, I have felt the need for a review of a really super piece of children’s literature since publishing that post. I guess I just feel the need… Continue

I've browsed the 200 pages of introductions over the past year and it's amazing all of the great ideas that are here. I share some of these on my own Tutor/Mentor Connection web site so that volunteers and students in non-school tutor/mentor programs might use these just as often, or perhaps more often, than do kids in inner city schools.
Many teachers have experienced the frustration of assigning a topic for a research project, then giving students a block of time in the computer lab, only to discover at the end of the class period that the students spent most of their time looking at sites that were off topic, or otherwise useless. Chances are that if a teacher sent her students off on an internet search with so little guidance, she uses the same methods and wastes her own time in similar fashion. It is likely that this… Continue

I was hoping I could find some teachers who are looking for a service project for their schools. In short, my best friend has started the first free all girls secondary school in Kenya and would love to have as many "sister" schools as possible.
You can read more about my connection with the school at my blog under the category Daraja:

You can see a video of his presentation, as well as videos and handouts from all the workshops. We are working on getting them posted and will be adding new slides and videos daily… Continue

Right now, today, we have the winds of change at our backs. We have a new administration that is willing to accept innovative ideas across the board. Educators are in a position to play a major role in this learning transformation. The next administration may not be willing to lend the support that the current administration is lending. America depends on individuals, groups and organizations to bring needed ideas to the table for discussion. How can we take advantage of this moment? Web 2.0…Continue

Vicki Davis's recent article in Edutopia described how her students use PLN for their research projects. Before reading this article, I always thought of a PLN as a way for teachers to organize their personal learning.
