Technology upgrade. Help needed!!!

At last I got my laptops and my wireless broadband in my classroom today. I only have 1 computer for each group of 4 students but its such a step forward for any school in our area. I am even more excited than the kids! Its even better than when we got our interactive white board. The thing is now, I need to plan the best way to use all this technology. I was hoping for some help, advice and inspiration. If anyone has any advice or has already been through this kind of an upgrade in the classroom…See More

Becoming a 21st century teacher

Here goes! This is my first attempt at blogging. Background first. I have been teaching since 1991. At Easter in 1998 I got the opportunity to come out of the classroom and work with the parents in my area. So for more than 10 years that's what I have been doing and I loved it. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn, that position has been taken from my schools and I am going back to the classroom. In Sept I will be teaching 11/12 year olds. Hi Marie, yes, penpal letters would be much like a friendly letter format. As part of our writing curriculum we stress the 6-traits of writing. One of those traits is word choice. By teaching this trait, we strive to help our students use vibrant and sensory language in their writing, to make their writing more enjoyable for the reader. Maybe we could exchange letters where the goal is to describe our neighborhoods or towns as much as possible? I only have 23 students, so I could see if a few of my kids would want to write to two people or you could see if a few of your students would mind having the same partner?

Hi Marie! I saw your post about wanting to collaborate! I am a fifth grade teacher in the US ...Illinois. We would love to do a collaborative project, maybe a penpal project to leran about how our cultures are similar and different? Where are you at in Ireland? My Grandparents were from Ennis in County Claire. I visited there about 10 years ago and would love to go back someday:) Let me know if you are still interested and maybe we can work something out!

We start back to school the same week you do. I guess the first thing we need to do is look at the time zones and see if there are some times that would allow us to skype with the kids. It would be a great intro to a collaborative project. What do you think?

Hi Marie,
I teach Technology classes to 5-14 yr olds. Our school is in Everett, Washington (US). I would love to arrange something with you and our 7th/8th grade classes if possible, either with me in the computer lab or with one of the 7th/8th grade homeroom teachers.
:-) Renee
