Map and Pins

In February we are doing a kick off assembly for a fundraiser to support our military families through the USO. One idea we had to help out kids show the impact our school's military families have had around the world is to have a map up that has two color pins, 1 for actively serving and 1 for veterans.

What I am looking for is a simple way to do it using either google earth/maps or using powerpoint a map and "pins". The end result will be shown on a bit screen in our gym during an all school assembley. Any suggestions or ideas would be great. My preference would be to do this using google or bing maps or google earth.
