I am a 3rd grade teacher in Connecticut, USA. For the past 2 years my students have made and flown kites in April when we learn measurement and fractions.

To incorporate cultural exchange and reading/writing into the unit, I am organizing a global kite project. So far there are 12 schools involved from every continent! We have participants from Belize, Brazil, Poland, India, China, Turkey, Kenya, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Mexico and Canada. Here is a link to the draft of the website (it is only starting, as most schools are doing the project this month): http://web.me.com/jmsalsich/Kites_Around_The_World/WELCOME.html

This is an invitation for others to join the project. If kites are something your students are familiar with (or want to be) it might be a fun way to share what they know while writing for an audience and using technology. All the pages will be in English, so they can learn about other countries while reading authentic student writing. It doesn't need to be anything fancy or in depth (but it can be), I'm hoping it will just be a way to use technology to enhance cultural understanding and improve communication. Photos, videos, artwork, audio, podcasts, or just text are all welcome.

I will be happy to give more details if you are interested. Thanks!
