Repost from my blog, Global Citizenship in a Virtual World:

Great news today, as the One Laptop Per Child initiative has announced a novel program to increase donations of its super-cheap laptop (dubbed the XO) to poor countries, while offering Americans an opportunity to get their hands on this cool and potentially world-changing tool themselves. For a limited time starting November 12, Americans can pay $400 to receive one of these laptops and also send one to a child in need.

Check out the hardware specs on this baby, which is built for learning on open-source software.

I can't imagine a better gift to give - or receive.

Could this be the beginning of OLPC's widespread acceptance in the US? Perhaps just seeing this device, and experiencing its potential, will inspire more of us to get involved in and support the initiative. Perhaps it could even be used in American schools. What do you think?
