Social Stories for Autistic Students

Social skills are difficult to impart to many students with autism or Aspergers. The social story has become an excellent new tool for teaching those valuable skills.

Myths Surrounding CAPD

Central Auditory Processing Disorder, or CAPD, is a hidden disability. While it may be hard to understand these unseen difficulties, they are real just the same.

Auditory Processing Disorder

Children with Central Auditory Processing Disorder often have normal hearing but difficulties processing oral information. CAPD affects about 5% of school age children.

Helping Children with Dyslexia

Children with dyslexia and reading disabilities may receive extra services at school, but there are ways parents can help at home as well.

Diagnosing Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects language processing. Early detection and intervention provide an opportunity for children to succeed.

About Me:
I am the special education teacher in a 5th grade collaborative classroom. I'm also a level I certified Professional Ski Instructor through PSIA for people with disabilities. My background in teaching and working with people of all abilities has helped me to understand how important it is to be inclusive of all people in the classroom and the community. I enjoy using technology to provide differentiated instruction to all learners, young and old. Technology is key to engaging and providing our students the skills they need to be lifelong learners.

Christine Southard's Blog

Have you seen the spedubloggers?

In my google searches: "special ed teacher + blog" and "specialneeds + blog," I'm not finding as many results as I expected for special education teacher blogs. It seems there aren't many special education teachers in classroom 2.0 either. Where are they? Where are they hiding? Are they afraid to discuss what's going in their classrooms via blogging? Are they turned off by the technology? Do they have access to the technology? Being a special education teacher isn't an easy job, I… Continue

Hi Christine,
Yes I have a pretty cool pic don't I!!
It was made about a year ago on a website called PaloozaHead. At the time it was a promotional site for a concert, it allowed you to upload your face, choose clothing and a song with which to dance to - totally hilarious but no longer around. I found it so amusing I took a screen shot of myself dancing and have used it here!! All good for a laugh :)

Hi Christine, Thanks for the welcome. Yes, we do work very close in range, in fact, do you know KarenK? from Searingtown? Please send her my regards. I haven't searched for her on CR2.0 but bet she's here somewhere. I see that you are a SB user. Great! We have a 7th grade SPED instructor who is using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom and loving it. I'd love to find ways to connect our students if possible. KIT PS I am opening up a ning site for us educators in NY to find ways to reach out and make recommendations. Let me know if you are in-ter-ested :)

Blanca :)

I have special education students in my classroom, not inclusion setting, but there is a particular studnet that concerns me. This young lady says that she finds the computer frustrating. Any suggestions to help ease her frustrtaions, especially since my school participates in online testing.

Christine--I am a Tech Resource Teacher in Virginia (3rd year) and taught in a Special Ed. Inclusion (4th grade) classroom for about ten years (20 years total in teaching). Sp. Ed. is my passion. My Sp. Ed. colleague found a great website that is on my blog roll--it's from Tennessee and has a wealth of information on game boards, etc.--it is under the link "A Resource Gourmet."

Hi Christine - Yeah the Special Educators are a minority here on CR2.0 but that is the truth anywhere. We are underrepresented and overvalued when it hits the fan ;). But really, I have found that the SPED teachers I know want to get away from school when they leave.

While we don't have as many students total as regular education teachers the ones we do have oh boy, most regular ed teachers don't want them around, they are too much of a distraction. Not to mention all the paperwork in addition to teaching classes.

Well enough whining, but it sure felt good! hehe. I am glad there are others like us around here and there is a group The Inclusive Revolution that has more info for us.

Well - any way I would be glad to have you on my friends list. -- Harold

Hey Christine--Yah, I was just thinking yesterday that it's been too long since I've checking with my "peeps" here at CR.20. WOW--the distance collaboration group has 83 members? I ought to get in there and stir the pot a bit! ;-) I'll find you on twitter--easy to do!
