The activity I chose to use for my global awareness lesson is focused around students creating a website that will ultimately be submitted to a cyberfair using the site GlobalSchoolNet.org.  The lesson is geared toward 5th grade students who have been studying ecosystem in their science class.  As a culminating activity, they will work in groups to research a local environmental concern and create a website to bring awareness in their community to the concern, reasons for the concern, and ways to possibly minimize,  end and or reverse the damages done by the environmental concern.  Students will present their websites to the class who will review them and vote for the top site which will represent the class in the cyberfair.

This activity will bring global awareness into the classroom in a few different ways.  The first and most significant is that the cyberfair that the students will be participating in is a global competition.  Students will be competing with other students of varying ages and abilities from around the world.  During the planning and introduction of the project students will be able to explore previously submitted projects on the same topics.  This will allow the students to become aware of environmental concerns from around the world and how these environmental issues are similar or different from their local issues.  Students will learn how various cultures and environments lead to different problems as well as different and unique solutions to the these environmental concerns.  By submitting their project to the competition, students will be bringing awareness of their local environmental concerns not only to their community, but they will be educating students around the world about their local concerns.

Hi Meghan!  This sounds like a great activity!  I think it would be helpful to students on a number of levels.  First, it teaches them to explore the world around them and to identify and propose ways to improve it.  Second, it exposes them to issues in other areas of the world.  Developing global awareness is key to success in today's global society.  Third, it helps them develop 21st century skills like technological know-how (i.e., website creation), as well as reading and writing skills.  Lastly and most importantly, I think students would find this activity both fun and engaging.  Nice job!
