I chose to loosely base my lesson off of "Arthur's World Neighborhood" as the topic for my lesson. Students will be given a choice of 4 different heritages to research and then present to the class. The first unit in my school's language arts curriculum is Heritage, each story in the unit has to do with a different heritage. Students will be given one of the 4 heritages, Vietnamese, Japanese, Sengalese, or Yup’ik to research in groups. Students will conduct Internet research and then develop a blog using kidblog.org. Once all groups are finished, students will complete a graphic organizer and write a paragraph comparing and contrasting two of the heritages. This activity will be used as a culminating activity for the end of the unit in language arts, incorporating both language arts and social studies.

I think this is a great idea. I like how you gave the students choices on what heritage they would like to research. I have found that this is always beneficial. I like how you are incorporating social studies into you language arts curriculum. This is always great because I know in my school we do not have much time to teach just social studies with the focus being on language arts and math. I like the idea of the students creating a blog. This is a great way to incorporate technology into your lesson.

I feel like we are constantly pushing social studies aside because there is just not enough time in the day. The other problem is, social studies isn't a DCAS tested area that counts for accountability scores, because of this there isn't much focus. I try to incorporate social studies into all lessons so that way students get the exposure they need.
