A Celebration of Grandfathers Essay: Short Answer Questions

Answer the following questions in order, using complete sentences and correct diction.  Support all answers.     

 

1.  What is the tone of the overall essay, and how do you know?

 

2.  How would you describe the author's attitude, or tone, towards the "old ones"?  In contrast, what is his attitude toward young people of today?

 

3.  How does the grandfather change toward the end of his life?

 

4.  Anaya's grandfather is inderectly characterized in this essay.  What do you learn about his character, from the diction the speaker uses, to explain the grandfather's words and actions?  List at least three adjectives that characterize Anaya's grandfather. 

 

5.  List three "life lessons" that Anaya learns form his grandfather and decide how he learns them (hint:  one was learned when Anaya stepped in an ant bed).

1. The speakers attitude is passionate almost confident. The tone is conveyed in a way that the reader feels passionate about youth respecting their elders and thanking them for all the hard work and time they invest into us. 

2. The authors attitude towards the "old ones" is proud and sentimental. The authors attitude towards the young people is hopeful for his generation to keep the old people "alive" through their words and actions. The author is proud of the "old ones" for all they have accomplished.

3. The grandfather is a very energetic child and young adult. He is physically and emotionally strong. As he ages, so does his body. He is upset that his body has withered, but is thankful for the memories he does have.

4. Anays's grandfather is loving and caring. He is always there to help Anaya with his problems and gives excellent advice. He is not dependent on others, he can hold his own. Anaya's grandfather feels very strongly about children respecting their elders. He has very clear set rules and he expects people to follow them. He loves his family dearly and wishes to see them grow up right and make something great out of themselves. Three adjectives are strongwilled, caring and compassionate.

5. One life lesson Anaya learned from his grandfather is to have respect for the "old ones" by greeting his grandfather every time he saw him. Another life lesson Anaya learned is to have patience. He was trying to learn English and he would complain that it is too hard so his grandfather told him that he can overcome that with patience. The last lesson Anaya learned from his grandfather is to "know where you stand" because Anaya stepped in a ant bed and got bit.   

1.The tone is overall is rememberance and abundant with a sturdy pride towards his grandfather.2.The author admires the exprience of "the old ones" and has dout towards the younger people of today.3.The grandfather changes the physical apperence and was only changed emotionally since he now had more limitations than he did when he was young wich frustraded him.4.The grandfather  was caring,skillful and determined.5.The first lesson is "know were you stand.

1. I believe the tone of the essay is to respect our elders. They have lived for many years and we can learn much from them.

2. The author showed much respect for their Grandfather, they looked up to their grandfather and spoke very highly of him. While telling the youth of today that it is necessary for us to remain in close contact with them and respectful of them  seeing as how we could learn much from our elders.

3. Towards the end the Grandfather seemed angry due to his lack of youth and not being able to take care of himself, he had to resort to being taken cared of instead as if he was a child. Although he still seemed to maintain happiness due to having lived a longer life than he anticipated.

4. I learned that Anayas grandfather was a Caring, well spoken and hard working man. He was a farmer for most of his life & referred to his grandsons and granddaughters as his own sons & daughters. He also spoke very wisely, teaching his grandchildren life lessons he had learned throughout his life

5. Anayas grandfather teaches Anaya to know where stands, meaning for her to always know who she is as a person and where she is. He also comforts her by teaching her and telling her that death is just another small transformation that is a part of life. In the end he teachers her that even when things are difficult, if Anaya maintains patience through time things will get better.

1 The tone of  this story is like a flashback ,the man is remembering how things used to be with his grandfather.
