There are a number of posts from individuals interested in using iPod Touches for teaching and Learning. At Culbreth Middle in Chapel Hill, NC we began a pilot this past August to place the iPod Touch in the hands of staff and students.

Our staff development for faculty to roll out the new technology centered on teacher coaches leading their groups in exploration through professional learning communities.

Our AVID students use the iPod Touch in the AVID classroom and in all other courses. They have piloted this program, using the iPod Touches daily for note taking, keeping individual agendas, translation for world languages, and accessing research through the Internet. In addition, our AVID students use many of the apps that teachers sync with these mobile devices. As student leaders, they’ve understood their responsibility to work and share this learning tool in collaborative groups.

This winter we were able to add iPod Touch labs for each of our seven interdisciplinary teams and two labs for our exploratory and resource teams. The interdisciplinary grade level iPod Touch labs are housed with each team and shared among the four content teachers (math, language arts, science, and social studies). These teachers plan together so that their students have access throughout each day. They access the internet as needed and use many apps as well.

Teacher current app favorites include: WordBook, Thesaurus, USA, Countries, Brain Tuner, Blanks, Whiteboard, CoinToss, Lose It!, Word Warp, FlipBook Lite. Of course they are using the included apps: Calendar, Calculator, Notes, Clock, YouTube throughout each day.

We held an iPod Touch Day last week with visitors from all over the state and from across the country. We even had a group from the UK come see our students and teachers in action with the iPod Touch. With almost 400 iPod Touches now in use at Culbreth, we’re happy to share what we’ve learned and what we’re learning.

Since the new iPods include a video camera, I think it is wise to look at articles written in regard to Flipcams (and other portable video cameras) in the classroom. Two we have found useful are listed below:

I agree, it is a tough call. I think the size obviously makes reading easier, but when it comes down to money I think I would rather 20 iPods than 6 iPads - which unfortunately is what it would boil down to..... decisions, decisions!!
I recommend 2-3 iPads in a classroom for small group work and then several iTouches to enable students to take photos, do easier recordings.

One of my favorite apps is Spoken Motion which is considered a business app. Students can take photos of say a map you are studying. They can then import that photo into Spoken Motion and draw say, the Silk Route with their finger while they record the action with narration. It can then be emailed to anyone. This can be used to explain a math problem, show area and perimeter, diagram a plant - the applications are limitless.
This sounds great, Katherine. Maybe a little like Voicethread?

Will check it out. I LOVE apps that allow you to create things on the iPod!!! Can't wait to have iPods with cameras!!!
Somewhat similar to voicethread though several students cannot respond to the same artifact at the same time and there is only one way to respond for one user.
Just ordered 50 of the iPod touches with cameras. You're right Deon, admin is a bit nervous about the cameras but of course excited too about the addition of content. We'll have new Parent/student agreements to share shortly.

Looking forward to The Mobile Learning Conference to share last year's experience with 1:1 and this year as we go 24/7 with all 700 students.
Here's a link to the policy we developed at my school:

I am looking forward to hearing and seeing your results Susan. See you in Phoenix in April!
Katherine,
I was reading Roger's use policy and comparing it to our's at Culbreth. I'm wondering if we might have time for a session to comparen/contrast/discuss use policies at our April conference? We all have good parts with states and the feds helping a bit, an hour or two to process might be a terrific opportunity...
Susan
Susan, I think this is great idea. I will work it in. You want two sessions correct?
two sessions would be great
I left you a direct message as well, did you get that one?
Thanks,
Susan
I bought our mics with earplugs on ebay - 15 sets for $53.85 AUD, delivered to school. They are like the Apple ones only a LOT cheaper and seem to be doing the job. I also bought 6 capsule mics for $2 each, silicone cases for $1.20 each, screen protectors for $1 each and Kingston chargers for $45 each (these charge 4 ipods at a time from a powerpoint), all from ebay and places in Hong Kong that generally offer free postage.
So far, there have been no problems!
The worst thing for me is that we have no Macs, only PC's, and syncing is my most time consuming problem.
